How to make cbd oil for my dog

Beginners Guide to CBD Oil for Dogs

In recent years the uses of the hemp and marijuana plant have been explored for human and animal use. Until recently all parts of marijuana were illegal to consume. Now with an increase in research, doctors are learning of the helpful uses of hemp, marijuana, and CBD.

What is CBD

Cannabidiol or CBD is found in hemp plants. Unlike what many people believe CBD does not contain THC. THC is the compound found in marijuana responsible for the euphoric state. In recent years CBD has been explored for potential medical uses with success in both human and veterinary medicine.

Is CBD oil for dogs safe?

CBD oil is very safe for dogs. Many dogs show improvement with their condition after taking CBD for a few weeks. Many people have reported that CBD in their dog or cat has significantly reduced or eliminated pain from arthritis or helped with seizures and other neurological problems.

What do you need to know about CBD Legality?

CBD is the non-psychoactive part of the plant and depending on what state you live in dictates if it is legal or illegal. THC is the psychoactive part of the plant and at this time is illegal for a veterinarian to prescribe to patients. Marijuana is currently listed as a controlled substance schedule 1 drug meaning that it has no medical benefit or that the benefits from the drug greatly outweigh the side effects with a very strong potential for abuse or addiction. Schedule 1 drugs are illegal for all veterinarians to prescribe and can only be used in research purposes. In human medication, there are certain instances where human doctors can prescribe marijuana to their patients. Hemp Based CDB is the better option due to these complications and commercial grade hemp is legal due to the 2018 farm bill.

How it works

CBD affects the endocannabinoid system. This system is found in all mammal’s bodies. The endocannabinoid system is a very complex system that contains multiple different receptors which play an important regulatory role throughout the body. Cannabinoids are chemical substances which act on specific receptors. There are three different types of cannabinoids: endocannabinoids, phytocannabinoids and synthetic cannabinoids. Endocannabinoids are naturally found in the body and are formed in response to an increase in calcium in the cell. Phytocannabinoids are produced by the female marijuana plant. Synthetic cannabinoids are manufactured compounds. Both phytocannabinoids and synthetic cannabinoids act in the body just like naturally occurring endocannabinoids. This chemical substance acts on two different receptors CB 1 and CB 2 . CB 1 is found mostly in the brain and parts of the nervous systems responsible for pain, movement or memory. They can also be found it a lesser degree on the pituitary gland, immune cells, reproductive tissues, intestines, heart, lungs, bladder and adrenal glands. CB 2 receptors are found in immune cells, tonsils, and spleen. The psychoactive effect is caused by the CB 1 receptor.

What are the benefits of CBD Oil for Dogs?

Colorado State University Veterinary School has published studies showing the benefits of CBD oil in reducing pain associated with osteoarthritis. The information that we have regarding the use of cannabis in veterinary medicine has come from recent studies done on laboratory rodents (mice, rats, and Guinea pigs). Studied on laboratory animals has shown benefits for disorders of the cardiovascular system, cancer, pain, disorders of the respiratory system or metabolic disorders. There has been very little published studied on cannabis in dogs, and cats. Most of the studies in companion and large animal medicine are on the toxic levels, effects, and treatment rather than therapeutic applications. Currently, some of the most frequent studies of cannabis in veterinary medicine are for the treatment of glaucoma, pain, skin disorders and cancer.

Cannabis has been shown to have a wide variety of beneficial effects on the body in laboratory and companion animals. Most cannabis has psychotropic properties which can cause behavior effects in animals and can become addictive. However, there are many other medications that have these same effects and are used for medical purposes today because the benefits are much greater than the side effects. Pet owners have reported the successful use of marijuana with their pets for both large and small animals. Studies are being performed to prove the benefits of cannabis in animals as well as products being produced that limit the THC content to help decrease the potential for toxicity.

Are there side effects of CBD oil?

There are studies published that show that CBD given to dog over a long period of time at very high dosages have little to no side effects. Some of the dogs taking the medication long term did show a slight increase in a liver enzyme (ALT). While most other medications used to treat dogs can have a large list of unwanted side effect. This makes CBD a great option especially for those pets with chronic pain or other medical conditions that prevent them from taking traditional medications.

How to Make CBD Dog Treats

Your pet and you will love all the benefits of this CBD Oil Dog Treats recipe.

There are many reasons why people have been giving their pets CBD-infused treats.

CBD is a compound derived from hemp.

It’s an ingredient commonly found in food and supplements and is believed to provide many medicinal properties and benefits.

There have been many studies done about the effects of CBD in dogs and they have shown that CBD may help decrease anxiety and other serious conditions.

Other potential health benefits include helping your dog sleep more, relieving joint pain, and increasing their appetite.

CBD is also believed to help alleviate stomach pain, reducing digestive distress.

Benefits Of Making Your Own CBD Treats

CBD and hemp-infused treats are available on many websites, including popular online pet stores like PetCareRx.

However, there are many benefits of making your own CBD treats.

Home-made treats are more nutritious because you have control over the ingredients you put in them.

There are lots of ways to prepare these CBD dog treats.

The recipe is simple, but the results can be very beneficial for your pet.

There are no preservatives or additives, which makes it quite safe for you and your canine companion.

Making your own treats is the only way you’ll be 100% sure of the ingredients in the treats you’re giving your pet.

There are some things to keep in mind though when preparing these treats.

The key to using CBD dog treats is to keep them fresh and to make sure your dog consumes them thoroughly when administered to them.

Many owners make their own treats do so for the safety of their own pets, especially if their dogs are allergic to anything.

Giving your pet treats that were made by someone else can be harmful to your pet if they have any allergies.

They’re a great resource for everything CBD and also features some amazing CBD products.

CBD Dog Treats Ingredients

1 cup apple sauce

½ cup peanut butter

¼ cup of coconut oil

1 tsp. baking soda

CBD Dog Treats Recipe

Before you begin, make sure you’re using all-natural ingredients and these ingredients don’t have any artificial flavors or chemicals added to them.

One extremely dangerous ingredient that you should avoid is xylitol, as this sweetener can be fatal to your pet even in the smallest of doses.

Before you begin, turn your oven on and let it preheat to 340 degrees Fahrenheit

Mix the apple sauce, peanut butter, and coconut oil thoroughly in a bowl.

Once you have these ingredients mixed, add the baking soda and flour while stirring constantly so these ingredients won’t clump up.

Mix all the ingredients except the CBD until you get a dough-like substance.

Keep in mind that you might need to make some adjustments and add additional flour or water if necessary.

At this point, you have two options.

You can either make small balls with your dough and make them into cookies or use a cookie cutter to cut your cookies into shapes.

If you do the latter make sure your dough is at least half an inch thick.

Before you put your cookies in the oven make sure you line your pan with wax or parchment paper.

This will ensure that your cookies don’t burn or stick from the bottom.

Once you have your pan lined, put the cookies in the oven for 15 minutes.

Then the cooking time ends, take your pan out of your oven and let your treats cool.

When dog treats are cool, you can add the last ingredient which is CBD.

You can simply put a drop or two (depending on your vet’s recommended dosage) on top of each cookie and let it absorb before giving the treat to your dog.

Serving Tips:

This recipe will make 20 servings so you should have enough to give one treat to your dog for almost a month.

Make sure you keep these treats in a moisture-free, airtight container so they won’t go bad or become stale. We recommend an airtight container stored in the refrigerator.

Limit your dog to one or two treats a day depending on their dosage.

If you’re unsure of their dosage please talk to your dog’s veterinarian first.

Conclusion:

Cooking with CBD is becoming more and more common, as many people decide it is better for them to make their own dog treats so they know what their pet is taking.

So next time you’re looking for ways to bring joy back into your pet’s life, consider giving them some CBD dog treats.

This natural supplement is believed to have numerous health benefits.

They’ll be happier and you’ll be happier as well.

The great news is that you don’t have to spend an exorbitant amount on expensive medication or other artificial supplements that might harm your pet.

With these natural dog supplements, they may feel better, look better, sleep better, and even act better than they did before.

Remember to consult with your veterinarian before changing your pet’s diet.

These are a perfect addition to this Barkcuterie Board on Today’s Best Recipe.

The Benefits Of CBD Oil For Dogs

The good news is that it can help with many of your dog’s health issues from allergies to cancer. The bad news is that the CBD industry for pets is still unregulated. That means the majority of pet owners might be getting ripped off.

So today I want to talk about all the good things CBD oil can do for your dogs. Then I’ll show you how to find the best product for your dog and talk about how to give it.

What Does CBD Oil Do For Dogs?

There’s a messenger system in your dog’s body called the endocannabinoid system. It helps regulate sleep, appetite, pain, the immune system and more. CBD impacts the activity of the messengers in this system and stimulates the nervous, digestive and immune systems, as well as the brain. And it can do this because the endocannabinoids in CBD are very similar to the ones found in your dog’s body.

That’s why the benefits of CBD can be deep and significant. And why CBD oil is the fastest-growing healthy plant in the world!

6 Ways CBD Oil Can Help Your Dog

Let’s take a look at common conditions where CBD can help dogs. And after I’ll talk about which CBD oil you should buy and general dosing information.

1. Dogs With Joint Problems

If your dog has joint pain, your vet might prescribe NSAIDs or other pain meds like Gabapentin. But NSAIDs can cause deterioration in joints and soft tissues … and they can damage your dog’s liver. Gabapentin can also cause kidney damage. Plus, it’s not all that effective.

CBD is a natural anti-inflammatory that doesn’t carry the same risk of side effects as drugs. It works by binding to CB1 receptors in the brain. These receptors stimulate the immune system to reduce inflammation. CB1 receptors also change the way the brain responds to pain.

CBD also binds to CB2 receptors found in the nervous and immune systems. When this happens, the body may produce more cannabinoids naturally. This helps reduce inflammation even more and reduce the pain associated with it.

In fact, researchers at Cornell University found that dogs taking CBD for arthritis were more active and showed a decrease in pain.

Some of the common people buy CBD Oil for dogs as an anti-inflammatory for joint problems include:

  • Arthritis
  • Hip and elbow dysplasia
  • Sprains and strains
  • Torn ligaments (CCL)

2. Dogs With Cancer

Sadly, 50% of adult dogs will get cancer. Cancer is a massive health challenge for dogs, especially if they undergo chemotherapy or radiation.

Cancer researchers are always looking for new ways to treat cancer and release the pain and nausea that can go with it. And CBD has been extensively researched as a cancer-fighting substance.

A study in mice showed that CBD slowed the growth of mammary cancer cells. And in 2018, researchers found that CBD increased survival time in mice with pancreatic cancer. Other animal studies show CBD oil has cancer-fighting abilities and can slow the growth of tumors.

In another study, cancer cells became more sensitive to treatment with CBD. That means CBD can increase the effectiveness of conventional cancer treatments.

CBD also kills cancer cells by blocking their ability to produce energy. And it can stimulate the immune system to produce killer cells that cause death in cancer cells.

Researchers also found that CBD blocks a cannabinoid receptor called GPR55. This is important because GPR55 increased the growth rate of cancer cells in mice.

CBD oil can also help with nausea associated with many cancer treatments. And studies have shown CBD can significantly reduce cancer-related pain.

3. Dogs With Seizures And Epilepsy

It’s estimated that about 5% of dogs suffer from seizures. They can be terrifying for both dogs and their humans … and they can cause anxiety.

Most vets treat epilepsy and seizures with antiepileptic drugs. Common options are phenobarbital or potassium bromide. But these drugs are extremely harmful to your dog’s liver and other organs. And even if the drugs don’t cause unmanageable side effects, they don’t always work …

So researchers at Colorado State University got excited when they studied CBD as a treatment for epilspsy in dogs. A whopping 89% of dogs that received the CBD had a reduction in seizures.

In human trials, CBD even worked in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. In one study, 7 out of 8 patients saw a marked improvement within 4 to 5 months.

CBD reduces the frequency and severity of seizures because of how it interacts with the endocannabinoid system. It’s believed that abnormal electric charges of the neurons in the nervous system cause seizures. But CBD can bind to receptors in the brain … researchers speculate this can improve the functioning of the nervous system.

4. Dogs With Anxiety

Anxiety is a common reason dog owners turn to CBD. Anxiety can appear in different forms, including:

  • Noise phobia
  • Separation anxiety
  • Aggression
  • Fear

Of course, there are anti-anxiety drugs available … but CBD is being studied for anxiety because it doesn’t carry dangerous side effects.

Most human users of CBD take it for pain, anxiety and depression. Over a third of these users report that CBD worked “very well by itself.” CBD has even helped manage anxiety and insomnia in children with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). And animal studies show its antidepressant effects aren’t just for people.

CBD can work quickly given directly by mouth when your dog gets stressed. It usually only takes 5 to 20 minutes to work. But CBD appears to be most beneficial for anxiety when given over a period of time. So if your dog is prone to stress, a daily dose might work best.

A 2012 study looked at stress in rats exposed to cats. The rats given repeated doses of CBD had less anxiety than those given a single dose.

Researchers aren’t certain how CBD relieves stress and anxiety, but it’s thought that it can help regulate serotonin. Serotonin is a hormone that regulates mood, social behavior, digestion, sleep and appetite.=

5. Dogs In Pain

Probably the most promising research on CBD is that done on pain. From nerve pain to arthritis, it works well … without the harmful side effects of pain medications.

CBD binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain and nervous system and this helps change the way your dog’s brain perceives pain. Plus, CBD can help manage the other symptoms that accompany pain, such as sleeplessness and nausea.

CBD can also help manage acute pain from injuries.

6. Dogs With Allergies

Allergies are on the rise in dogs. And they’re difficult to treat … so, sadly, allergies are a common reason dogs are euthanized. Skin conditions in general are one of the most frequent reasons for vet visits.

The endocannabinoid system is also found in the skin … and that’s good news for dogs with allergies. It means CBD can help relieve dry and itchy skin. And it can promote the growth of new healthy skin cells.

You can give CBD internally for allergies, or use it externally for hot spots or interdigital cysts.

Now that you know a bit more about WHY you would give your dog CBD oil to your dog, let’s about HOW to choose a good quality product.

How To Choose The Best CBD Oil For Your Dog

CBD (Cannabidiol) is a naturally found substance in cannabis and hemp. Both deliver amazing health benefits … but there are differences.

Cannabis (marijuana) contains a relatively large amount of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). THC is what causes the psychoactive activities of cannabis. It’s why marijuana can give a “high” or “buzz.”

CBD oil made from hemp contains much lower amounts of THC. To sell hemp legally, it must contain less than 0.3% THC. So while your dog can still enjoy the calmness and reduction in anxiety that CBD provides, he won’t get high. And that’s important … because you might enjoy the high, but your dog definitely doesn’t!

Your dog will also get the same pain-relieving and immune-supporting benefits from hemp CBD.

But not all hemp CBD products are the same …

1. Look For A Full Or Broad Spectrum Hemp

Check the label of your CBD product to make sure it’s full spectrum or broad spectrum.

This means your dog’s CBD oil contains not just CBD, but other important cannabinoids that occur naturally in full-spectrum hemp. This includes CBC (Cannabichromene) and CBG (Cannabigerol).

Researchers have looked at CBC for its …

  • Cancer-fighting activities
  • Ability to block pain and inflammation
  • Positive effect on brain cells

CBG is also studied for its medicinal use. It can decrease inflammation in the digestive tract and it can protect nerve cells and the eyes. It also supports healthy bladder function and fights cancer cells.

A full-spectrum CBD oil will also contain terpenes such as limonene, alpha-pinene, and beta-pinene. These are also naturally occurring medicinal substances found in all hemp.

Together, cannabinoids and terpenes create the entourage effect. This happens when compounds in hemp oil work synergistically to boost the medicinal properties of hemp oil.

CBD extracted with CO2 (I’ll talk about this in a moment) pulverizes the terpenes. This will make them hard to detect in testing and they won’t show up on the Certificate Of Analysis …

… but they’ll still be there and will contribute to the CBD oil’s medicinal effects.

CBD extracted with solvents will better preserve the terpenes. So you will find them noted on the Certificate Of Analysis.

But I don’t recommend solvent extracted products, which leads me to my next point …

2. Make Sure Your Dog’s CBD Uses CO2 Extraction

There are two common ways to extract the CBD oil from the hemp plant:

CO2 Extraction

As you’ve probably guessed, CO2 extraction uses carbon dioxide to extract oil from the plant. Using a high-pressure chamber, CO2 puts pressure on the hemp. This breaks down the hemp and releases the oil.

This method of extraction creates oils with a higher concentration of CBD. That means your dog will get more from his supplement. Of course, that also makes the product more expensive … but it’s better than the alternative.

Solvent Extraction

The cheapest way to extract oil from the hemp plant is with solvents, such as …

  • Propane
  • Butane
  • Petroleum products

But residue from these solvents will be in the product and they can be toxic to your dog.

Some CBD extraction uses natural solvents, such as ethanol or olive oil. This is much safer for your dog but these oils can destroy the hemp plant’s waxes and the resulting oil isn’t as beneficial.

3. Look For A Certificate Of Analysis

If your dog’s CBD oil doesn’t have a certificate of analysis (COA), run away!

A certificate of analysis is a document that shows the amount and type of cannabinoids in the CBD product. And it usually comes from a third-party laboratory,

COAs protect your dog from poor quality products and the manufacturer should have one for each batch of hemp. If there isn’t a COA on the company’s website, you’ll want to ask for one before you buy any CBD oil.

When looking at the COA, there are 5 important things to look for.

CBD Is The Same As Advertised

This is more common than you would think … in fact, we were once tricked by this!

What you might see is something like “500 mg CBD” on the product label. But don’t take the label at face value! Make sure the COA says the same amount as the label does.

Some lab tests express the CBD content in mg/g. So to calculate the amount of CBD, you need to know how many grams are in the bottle of CBD.

For example, let’s say the COA shows 16.9 mg/g CBD. To calculate how much CBD is in the product, multiply the number of mg/g by the number of grams the bottle weighs. (A typical 1-ounce dropper bottle of CBD will weigh 30 grams.) This will give you the total mg of CBD in the bottle. In this example, it’s 507 mg (16.9 mg/g x 30 gram bottle).

CBD Is Really Full Spectrum

Again, never take the label at face value! Some CBD is from isolate, which means it won’t have other important cannabinoids and terpenes.

Remember the entourage effect? You won’t get this extra boost with CBD isolate. So how do you find out if your dog’s CBD is from isolate? The COA will show that the product only contains CBD and no other cannabinoids. Stay away from these products.

There’s Not Too Much (Or Too Little) THC

If your dog’s CBD contains more than 0.03% THC, it’s probably marijuana and not hemp. It’s not legal and your dog won’t enjoy the psychoactive effects.

You also want to avoid products with zero THC. If there’s none, then your dog’s CBD is from isolate … and the health benefits will be fewer.

A Third-Party Did The Tests

Once again, never take the manufacturer’s word that the product is high quality. Make sure the product was properly tested by a third party lab. Unfortunately, the CBD industry isn’t regulated, which leaves you vulnerable to poor products.

There’s No Contaminants

You need to know where and how the hemp that’s used to make the CBD oil is grown. This plays a huge role in those test results you see in the COA.

Always look for an organic product to reduce any environmental toxin risks. You want to know that the soil and water it’s grown in is as clean as possible. That’s because hemp plants are really good sponges and can absorb contaminants as they grow. And it’s why heavy metal toxicity can be a concern when looking at CBD oils.

So be sure that you check the COA for any contaminants such as pesticides, heavy metals and solvent residues.

Cost Shouldn’t Be A Priority

It can be hard to compare products and some people give up and look at costs only …

… but this is not the best approach!

You want a high-quality and safe product for your dog. Extracting CBD from hemp requires a lot of plant material as well as careful monitoring.

If the product you’re considering has a price that’s significantly lower than the competition, there’s probably a reason for that …

But the most expensive doesn’t mean it’s the best CBD oil for dogs …

Instead, consider what we’ve reviewed …

  • How was the CBD oil extracted? (CO2 is best.)
  • Is the CBD concentration different than advertised? (CBD on COA should match the bottle.)
  • Is it full-spectrum? (The product should have other cannabinoids, not just CBD.)
  • Is the THC content worrisome? (THC should be less than 0.3% but higher than 0%.)
  • Is it organic? (Hemp is a sponge for contaminants.)
  • Was it third party tested? (If you can’t find a COA online, ask the manufacturer for one.)

These variables are what you need to look for when determining the quality of a product. The cost is never a sure sign of a product’s quality.

Side Effects Of CBD Oil For Dogs

The American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association surveyed dog owners. They wanted to see what, if any, side effects they noticed. And the great news is that there weren’t any major effects reported.

The most consistent side effects noticed were:

  • Sedation 19%
  • Overactive appetite 5%
  • Lack of energy 4%
  • Panic reactions 2.7%
  • Dry mouth/excessive drinking 2.3%
  • Nausea 1.7%
  • Vomiting 1.7%
  • Increased seizures 0.69%
  • Impaired mental functioning 0.68%

This means the most likely side effect you may see is that your dog gets sleepy. And that isn’t a bad thing. Especially if your dog suffers from seizures, anxiety, or has any pain, and you’d like to give CBD oil a try …

… but some CBD oils will have other additives and may not be safe.

Caution With CBD Oil Additives

You want to be sure there are no chemical additives or preservatives in the product you buy. These will cancel out the health benefits, even if the hemp is grown organically.

Also be aware of companies who have added essential oils (EOs) to their CBD oil. Even though they’re “natural,” EOs can affect animals profoundly.

If your holistic vet has recommended using a CBD oil with an EO, then follow her dosing recommendations. She’ll know what’s best for your dog’s unique health needs.

Some will recommend using CBD with frankincense as it’s good for tumor reduction in cancer patients. But always check with your holistic vet or herbalist first.

Dogs Taking Other Medications Or Supplements

If your dog is taking any other medications or supplements you will want to check with your holistic vet as well. CBD oil has many health benefits but it can change how your dog metabolizes some medications or supplements.

Researchers have looked at how CBD oil changes metabolism in humans. It can be similar to grapefruit, which causes significant reactions. So if your dog is taking any of the following medications you’ll need to ask your vet about dose changes:

  • Steroids
  • Allergy medications
  • Liver or kidney medications
  • NSAIDs
  • Heart medications
  • Anxiety medications

Hopefully, your holistic vet has helped you find alternatives to the medications above. But even then … CBD can affect herbs and natural supplements.

This doesn’t mean you can’t give your CBD oil if he uses other supplements or medications. You may just need to make adjustments. CBD changes the metabolism of other things but sometimes for the better! Meaning you can use less of another product or skip on the medications altogether.

And less is often more.

CBD Oil Dosage For Dogs

Each bottle of CBD has a specific concentration expressed in milligrams (mg). Most dogs are okay with the taste, so you can just put it on your dog’s food.

Dr Robert Silver recommends giving your dog 0.05 to 0.25 mg/pound of body weight, twice daily. He also suggests starting with a lower dose and working your way up. If 0.05 mg/pound is enough, stay at that dose. There’s no need to increase unless the lower dose stops working. If that happens, increase the dose to 0.125 mg/pound, twice daily and only continue to increase if your dog needs it.

For anxiety or health prevention, you’ll usually find that the lower doses work well. But if your dog is dealing with pain or immune issues, you’ll probably need a larger amount.

CBD Oil for Dogs

CBD for dogs can support and promote long-term health in your canine. CBD oil is a holistic option for pet owners. As scientific research supporting pet CBD use rises, so does the number of pet owners adding CBD supplements to their dog’s daily routine.

However, so do the number of questions – how does CBD work? Is it safe, or are there any side effects? How can I add CBD to my dog’s routine? And what do I need to consider when choosing the right CBD product for my dog?

Keep reading if you want to find out the answers and learn everything you need to know about supplementing your dog with CBD oil.

What is CBD Oil for Dogs?

CBD or cannabidiol is a naturally occurring compound found in the flowers, leaves, and stalks of the cannabis plant.

The cannabis plant (specifically the Cannabis Sativa L. species) comes in two varieties: marijuana and hemp. Both plants are rich in cannabinoids but have a different cannabinoid profiles.

Marijuana is rich in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and low in cannabidiol (CBD), while hemp is rich in cannabidiol (CBD) and low in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Why is this important? Well, CBD is known for its medicinal properties, while THC is the compound responsible for the “high” feeling in people. Plus, THC is extremely toxic to pets.

Therefore, CBD oil products formulated for dogs are derived from hemp, which is loaded with cannabidiol and contains less than 0.3% THC (an amount that is too low to cause issues).

How does CBD Affect Dogs?

Pet CBD affects dogs by interacting with the endocannabinoid system. CBD binds with the endocannabinoid receptors and promotes overall balance and optimal function.

What Is The Endocannabinoid System?

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a regulatory system of the body that plays a crucial role in managing vital physiological processes (hormones, immune responses, pain and inflammation responses, sleep patterns, appetite, emotional balance), thus promoting homeostasis.

The ECS consists of endocannabinoids, endocannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2), and enzymes. The endocannabinoids bind with the receptors to manage the above-mentioned functions, and enzymes break them down.

How Much CBD Oil Should I Give My Dog?

The right amount of CBD oil for your dog depends on several factors, including your dog’s age, weight, overall health, the reasons for using CBD, and the potency of the CBD product.

Although there are dosage variations, the general rule of thumb is that you can give your dog between 1 and 5 milligrams of CBD oil per 10 pounds of body weight. You can use our CBD oil for dogs dose calculator as a starting point.

Usually, it will take some experimentation until you find the perfect CBD dosage for your dog. It is recommended to start with a smaller dose and then adjust it accordingly.

For example, if your dog shows side effects (which are rare), you can decrease the dose even more. On the other hand, if it seems like the initial dose is not working (keep in mind it takes 15-40 minutes for the effects to start working), you can safely increase it within the recommended dosage guidelines.

Sublingual application of CBD oil – CBD oil can be administered sublingually (under the tongue) by drawing the oil into the dropper and squirting it directly into the dog’s mouth, near the back. This is the best method for quick results. However, some dogs dislike having their mouths handled.

CBD oil during mealtime – alternatively, you can squirt the oil from the dropper into the food bowl and mix it with the regular food. Start with a smaller dose so your dog will not be able to sense the meal’s change in flavor, smell, and texture.

CBD oil dropped on a dog treat – you can drop the oil onto a porous dog treat and then give it to your dog. Your dog will love treat time and will not mind the CBD oil addition.

CBD infused edibles – there are commercially available CBD edibles for pets like chews, bites, and peanut butter. These have a set CBD dosage amount and are very practical, especially when you are on the go.

Homemade CBD infused treats – it is possible to bake your dog homemade treats infused with CBD oil. You just need to remember that high temperatures can deactivate the CBD ingredients, and calculating the exact amount of CBD per treat can be tricky.

Topical CBD oil products – usually come in the form of balms or creams. They are efficient and practical – just make sure your pup does not lick them off (they are not harmful but need to be absorbed into the skin to achieve health effects).

What Dog Health Problems can CBD Oil Help?

Since the endocannabinoid receptors are vastly distributed within the body and their various functions, pet CBD has a remarkable ability to support the body in many different ways.

Possible Side Effects of CBD in Dogs

The World Health Organization report on cannabidiol states that “CBD is generally well-tolerated, with a good safety profile.” A veterinary study confirms the same and says that “CBD-rich, hemp-based nutraceuticals appear to be relatively safe in healthy dogs.”

However, as with any other supplement, high amounts, especially in overly sensitive dogs, can cause certain side effects. The good news is that these side effects of CBD oil in dogs are rare, usually self-limiting, and can be eliminated through a simple dose modification.

Here is a short list of the possible side effects:

Dry Mouth – a decrease in the production of saliva is a typical response to CBD. Your dog will be thirstier than usual so make sure you provide fresh, clean water daily.

Low Blood Pressure – a high dose of CBD may cause a sudden blood pressure drop, leaving your pup slightly nauseous, lightheaded, and lethargic. Your dog will likely sleep off these effects in a few hours.

Diarrhea – dogs have sensitive digestive systems, and the carrier oil (for example, coconut oil) in your CBD tincture can cause an adverse reaction in your pup. A way to curve this reaction is by starting with a small dose and working your way up to a normal CBD dose.

For pet owners, the main concern about using CBD oil for dogs is the risk of overdosing. Luckily, CBD has extensive safety margins. In layman’s terms – it is impossible for a dog to overdose on CBD oil. Worst-case scenario, your dog will take a long nap and sleep off the CBD’s effects.

However, CBD oil can cause an increase in liver enzymes and slight complete blood count changes. This means it can be risky to use CBD oil in dogs with liver issues and dogs regularly receiving certain prescription medications. Bottom line, it is important to consult with your veterinarian before supplementing your dog with CBD oil.

What to Look for in CBD Oil for Dogs

We encourage pet owners to do their research, ask questions and make sure they buy high-quality CBD oil that has been tested and certified.

Sadly, some companies cut corners to get their product out as quickly as possible. This puts owners in danger of buying substandard CBD products that will be useless (or worse –harmful) to their pets.

Here are some of the key considerations to help you navigate through the CBD industry’s poor regulations and dubious label claims:

Full-spectrum CBD oil. Basically, there are three forms – full-spectrum CBD oil, broad-spectrum CBD oil, and CBD isolate. Full-spectrum hemp is more potent because it contains various cannabinoids and additional compounds (flavonoids, terpenes, omega fatty acids) that act synergistically.

Hemp-derived CBD oil. CBD oil formulated for pets must be extracted from the hemp plant. This is because the other member of the cannabis family, the marijuana, contains THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is extremely toxic to pets. Hemp CBD oil contains less than 0.3% THC and is therefore labeled THC-free.

Hemp oil vs. hemp seed oil. Both options are extracted from the hemp plant but from different parts and have different chemical profiles. Hemp oil is extracted from the whole hemp plant (leaves, flowers, and stalks) and the hemp seed oil from the seeds. Hemp seed oil does not contain cannabinoids.

CO2 extraction. There are different extraction methods but using supercritical carbon dioxide ensures a pure CBD oil product. The CO2 extraction eliminates the questionable chemicals while retaining all health-boosting cannabinoids.

Organic hemp. The best pet CBD product is made from organically grown hemp. Commercially grown plants are heavily treated with pesticides and can draw toxins from the soil. Organic farming practices eliminate these issues. Ideally, even the carrier (usually coconut oil) should be organic.

No GMO, allergen, and filler ingredients. GMO ingredients, dairy, corn, soy, and gluten, are potentially troublesome. Therefore, a high-quality pet CBD oil must be free from these ingredients.

Certificate of Analysis. A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a document provided by a third-party lab that confirms the accuracy of the product’s label and its chemical makeup. The COA will prove the amount of cannabinoids in the oil and the exclusion (or low percentage) of THC and confirm the oil is free from pesticides, heavy metals, microbes, and other contaminants.

Reputable brand. Choose a CBD oil from a trustworthy brand that has a right-standing with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a good rating on Better Business Bureau, and excellent customer reviews. Also, pay attention to the brand’s policy – for example, a brand confident in its products will offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Should I give my dog CBD oil every day?

Yes, continuous use is associated with better effects. Find your dog’s ideal CBD dose and then use it daily for maximum physical health and emotional wellbeing.

How does CBD oil make a dog feel?

CBD oil will make a dog feel calmer and more relaxed. When using the right CBD dose, your dog will be able to carry all normal activities while enjoying the health benefits of CBD.

The Benefits of CBD Oil For IBS

There are many potential causes for IBS, but much of what triggers the condition remains unknown. Most of the causes point to a loss of equilibrium in the digestive tract. So the carefully orchestrated balance involved with digestion, absorption, immune defense, and excretion is compromised.

Cannabidiol (CBD) helps with this problem because it serves as a way to “calibrate” different parts of the body. It does this by improving the communication between cells through the endocannabinoid system.

The benefits of CBD oil for IBS Include:

  • Addresses anandamide deficiencies [13]
  • Reduces inflammation [7, 8]
  • Inhibits digestive muscle hyperactivity and cramping [5, 6]
  • Decreases appetite [9]

CBD will affect the condition differently depending on the form of IBS.

People who have IBS with diarrhea (IBS-D) are likely to experience the most benefit from CBD because cannabis slows muscle contraction in the digestive tract.

But people who have IBS with constipation (IBS-C) can still find benefit from CBD due to the anti-inflammatory, appetite-suppressant, and immune-stimulating properties of the compound.

We’ll get into the different forms of IBS and how CBD is used to support them later on.

What Form of CBD Should I Use?

CBD comes in all different forms. You can buy oils, capsules and concentrates.

When it comes to IBS, the most popular options are oils, capsules, and suppositories.

CBD oils and capsules are easy to take, to store for long periods of time, and can be accurately dosed.

Suppositories have the benefit of delivering the CBD directly to the affected area. This is best for severe IBS-D (more on this below) but can benefit other forms of IBS as well.

What’s The Dose of CBD Oil For IBS?

Dosing CBD can be a challenge because it affects everybody differently.

Some people take 50 mg of CBD per day, while others need more or less.

The dose also depends on the form of CBD you’re taking. As we mentioned, CBD oil and suppositories are the most popular for people with IBS, but the dose for each form varies significantly.

If using oils or capsules, the best way to find a good starting dose it to read through our CBD oil dosing guide.

For IBS, we recommend starting at the low strength and working your way up slowly to see how you react to CBD.

It will likely take about two or three weeks of regular CBD use before you start noticing any real benefits for your IBS symptoms.

If using CBD suppositories, it’s best to follow the specific instructions listed by the supplier on the packaging. Concentrations can vary from one CBD suppository to the next.

How to Get the Most Out of CBD Oil for IBS

CBD shouldn’t be used alone to treat IBS. This condition is highly complex and involves multiple organ systems.

Other forms of treatment, including dietary changes and physical activity, are essential. If these lifestyle changes aren’t addressed, CBD is not likely to have any effect at all.

You can think of CBD as a bus driver — it will drive the occupants towards a destination, but they can’t arrive without a well-maintained bus filled with gas.

CBD is a tool to help alleviate uncomfortable symptoms of IBS and is used to bring the body back to balance.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD stands for cannabidiol. It’s one of the primary cannabinoids in the cannabis plant.

Most CBD oils on the market today come from the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa), which is a strain of cannabis naturally low on THC — the primary psychoactive cannabinoid.

This means that most CBD products on the market have no psychoactive effects.

CBD is used as a health supplement for a wide range of medical conditions. It owes much of its ability to support health to its involvement with the endocannabinoid system.

The endocannabinoid system regulates balance in the body, otherwise known as homeostasis. This includes the immune, digestive, neurological, musculoskeletal, and integumentary (skin) systems.

What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome (or IBS) is classified as a syndrome, rather than a disease because it’s a set of symptoms that can’t be linked to a particular cause.

IBS can be summarized as a “widespread dysfunction of the digestive tract.”

Symptoms involve bloating, abdominal pain, indigestion, and changes in bowel movements (constipation or diarrhea, which can be severe).

The symptoms of IBS are very similar to those of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The difference is that IBD has inflammation present in the gastrointestinal tract, confirmed by Lab tests and special cameras inserted in the digestive system.

If no inflammation is present to confirm a diagnosis of IBD, an IBS diagnosis is given instead.

In this process, there are some diagnostic criteria put in place by various experts, but none of them are conclusive and not all doctors agree on them for a diagnosis of IBS.

The most popular criteria doctors tend to use is something called the Rome III Criteria.

IBS Diagnosis: The Rome III Criteria Checklist

In order to meet a diagnosis of IBS, the patient must have the following symptoms:

  • Recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort at least 3 days per month over 3 months
  • Symptoms involving at least two of the following characteristics:
  • Improvement of symptoms with defecation
  • Onset associated with a change in stool frequency
  • Onset associated with a change in stool form

If these criteria are met and there is no other explanation for a cause (such as inflammation, traumatic damage, or infectious disease) the patient is diagnosed with IBS.

Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome:

3 Types of IBS & the Effects of CBD

20-50% of visits to a gastroenterologist end in a diagnosis of IBS [3], making it the most common functional disorder of the digestive system.

Gastroenterologists further classify IBS according to the most predominant symptoms:

1. Diarrhea-Dominant IBS (IBS-D)

This refers to IBS presented primarily with diarrhea.

IBS-D symptoms indicate that the bowels are filling with water. Common precursors for this include high sodium foods, a poor gut membrane, and hyperactive muscle activity in the digestive tract.

With high sodium foods and poor membrane control, water begins to accumulate in the areas filled with salty foods. This happens because of a principle in biophysics called osmosis: the water goes where the salt is. As the intestines fill up with water, it causes diarrhea.

Additionally, many people with IBS-D experience hyperactive muscle activity in the intestinal tract. When the muscles become spastic, they experience cramping, abdominal pain, and bloating. The digestive tract pushes food through too quickly without properly breaking it down and absorbing it. Instead, unabsorbed foods begin to ferment in the large intestine, causing severe bloating, nausea, and diarrhea.

CBD is useful for this type of IBS because it can reduce spastic muscle activity in the gut, allowing it to properly digest and absorb nutrients. For this type of IBS, it’s best to combine CBD with a low-sodium diet and a good source of soluble fiber.

2. Constipation-Dominant IBS (IBS-C)

IBS-C stands for IBS presented predominantly with constipation.

This type of IBS indicates low activity in the digestive tract. Pancreatic enzymes, bile, and stomach acid are scant. These enzymes help break down our food and stimulate the smooth muscle lining our intestines. This stimulation causes the muscles to expand and contract, moving food along the digestive tract.

If there is a problem with the secretion of digestive enzymes or muscle movement in the intestinal tract, we become constipated.

This can be extremely uncomfortable, causing symptoms such as severe bloating, feelings of fullness, nausea, fatigue, and physical belly distention.

Although nothing will produce the same level of benefit as a change in the diet, CBD does offer some unique benefits to this form of IBS.

CBD increases anandamide — a naturally occurring endocannabinoid responsible for slowing bowel movement, fighting inflammation, and controlling microbiome diversity.

3. Alternating IBS (IBS-A) or Mixed-type IBS (IBS-M)

This form of IBS involves alternating bouts of diarrhea and constipation.

The potential causes of this type of IBS are far more variable and can involve factors of both. For several months, the patient may suffer from constant diarrhea, followed by several months of severe constipation. The sudden changes in bowel activity can be due to dietary, neurological, or immunological factors — making the cause hard to isolate and treat.

CBD is useful for this type of IBS because it doesn’t push the digestive function in any specific direction. Instead, it improves the body’s ability to regulate homeostasis. Along with other therapies to manage symptoms, the body has a better chance of returning to a higher state of health on its own.

What Causes IBS?

The exact cause of IBS is not yet understood — but there are some well-accepted theories in the medical community.

Suspected Causes of IBS Include:

1. Diet

Western countries including Canada, The United States, and Sweden have the highest rates of IBS in the world [11, 12]. In the United States, roughly 1 in 10 people suffer from IBS.

These nations often consume diets high in processed foods. Foods that have been highly processed tend to have poor nutritional content (in terms of vitamins, antioxidants, minerals) and are high in calories (in the form of fat or sugar).

When we eat these foods, they tend to move slowly through our digestive tract due to the lack of fiber and bulk of the food.

The slow movement and high sugar content cause this food to ferment in the digestive tract by bacteria living there. Fermentation in this context is bad for our digestive functioning — it causes bloating, pain, and changes in bowel movements.

One of the main dietary treatments for IBS is called a low FODMAPS diet, which substitutes highly processed foods for high-fiber, low sugar ones.

Frequent fermentation of processed sugars can damage the structural integrity of the digestive lining over time — leading to accumulation of fluid and diarrhea (IBS-D) or lack of movement in the muscles in the small and large intestines causing constipation (IBS-C).

2. Viral Infection

Viral infections can cause a lot of damage to the body. Many people report their IBS symptoms started shortly after getting a stomach bug overseas. After a few days of illness, they seemed to be getting better, but their gut never fully recovered.

Viruses disrupt normal cellular function, hijacking our cells to manufacture more viruses and preventing them from their job. They can wreak havoc on an entire organ in a short amount of time.

The digestive lining is home to a complex ecosystem of bacteria and fungal species called the microbiome. The microbiome is heavily involved with digestion and absorption in the digestive tract. When we fall ill with a virus, this can cause dramatic changes to the microbiome, leaving us with long-lasting side-effects, such as IBS.

3. Neurological Dysfunction

The movement of the intestinal tract (called peristalsis) is a complex orchestra of muscle contractions working together to move food through the intestinal tract. This involves careful innervation both locally and in collaboration with the brain.

Many people find that when they drink coffee, it stimulates a bowel movement. This is a good visualization of how the nervous system affects the digestive tract.

If our nervous system is in a state of constant stimulation, we are likely to develop diarrhea (IBS-D).

If we experience the opposite (insufficient stimulation), we are likely to end up with constipation (IBS-C).

Based on neurological activity, we can compare IBS types with other side-effects that often affect IBS patients at the same time.

Neurological Characteristics of IBS and Related Side-Effects:
IBS type Nervous System Activity Related Side-Effects
IBS-D Too stimulated Anxiety Panic disorders Insomnia Heart palpitations
IBS-C Not stimulated enough Fatigue Depression
IBS-A Either too stimulated or not enough Anxiety Panic disorders Insomnia Heart palpitations Fatigue Depression Immune deficiencies

4. Inflammation

Although IBS by definition does not require visible or detectable inflammation, numerous studies have shown that IBS sufferers have low-grade inflammation of the gut wall [2]. This inflammation may be too subtle to be picked up by blood tests or visual inspection with colonoscopies/endoscopies.

Common Medications Used to Treat IBS

Lifestyle and diet changes will have the most impact on treating IBS. Besides the low FODMAP diet, it can help to reduce stress and get more exercise.

In some cases, medications can be prescribed to help reduce the symptoms of IBS. For diarrhea, drugs like loperamide, rifaximin, or eluxadoline may help. Fiber supplements, laxatives, lubiprostone, or linaclotide can be used to treat constipation. Abdominal pain can be relieved with antispasmodics. Sometimes antidepressants are prescribed for those with more extreme cases.

The Endocannabinoid System & IBS

The endocannabinoid system is thought to play a major role in IBS [10].

The CB1 and CB2 endocannabinoid receptors are used to regulate different processes in the human body — many of which are present in the digestive tract.

CBD for Other Functional Disorders

IBS is considered a functional disorder, suggesting there’s a clear problem with the function of the organ without an apparent cause.

Other conditions that fit this category are fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome — both of which are also improved with regular CBD use. The mysterious nature of these conditions makes it difficult to pinpoint exactly why CBD is so useful for treating them, but the likely explanation is the role CBD plays in homeostasis.

Homeostasis is the state of balance in the body. It penetrates virtually every aspect of life — from body temperature to digestive enzyme secretion. Any issues with homeostasis can negatively affect our health.

CBD serves as a useful tool for regulating homeostasis, which is why this compound has so many different benefits.

Key Takeaways: Using CBD for IBS

Although IBS isn’t well understood, it likely involves a combined dysfunction of multiple organ systems, lifestyle habits, and diet — CBD offers broad benefits towards different variations of the condition.

It’s best to use CBD in the form of an oil, capsule, or suppository for optimal results. It’s also important to take CBD oil for long periods of time to exert its full effects. CBD can take a while to start providing benefits for this condition because there are many factors involved.

Through persistent CBD supplementation, dietary and lifestyle changes, and patience, IBS symptoms can be forced into remission for long periods of time.

Best Way to Take CBD Oil for IBS

IBS is an uncomfortable condition that affects around 35 million people in the United States. Since many conventional treatments for IBS cause significant side effects, people who suffer from the symptoms of IBS are on the hunt for alternative treatments. In this guide, learn if CBD works for IBS, and find out the best ways to take this cannabinoid if you’re suffering from IBS symptoms.

Does CBD help IBS?

Over the last decade or so, research into CBD has accelerated at an unprecedented pace, and scientists have realized that CBD may help with a wide variety of serious conditions. While there is no definitive answer regarding whether CBD can help with IBS, a significant amount of research has been invested into this subject, and scientists continue to investigate the potential benefits of CBD when it comes to inflammatory conditions like IBS.

What’s clear is that CBD, as a derivative of the hemp plant, does not have intoxicating properties, making this cannabinoid very different from THC, which is an intoxicating and addictive substance found in the cannabis plant. Therefore, IBS patients can try CBD without worrying about intoxication or any other significant adverse effects.

What is IBS?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is an inflammatory condition that affects the colon (large intestine). The most common symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome are diarrhea and constipation, but other symptoms associated with IBS include abdominal pain, bloating, cramping, and gas. As one of the most uncomfortable conditions that can affect the digestive tract, people with IBS are constantly searching for safe, natural forms of IBS relief.

How does CBD Oil Work?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid that does not significantly stimulate the CB1 and CB2 receptors. These cannabinoid receptors cause the feeling of intoxication that accompanies THC use, and even though full-spectrum CBD can contain up to 0.3% THC, that’s not enough to activate your CB2 or CB1 receptors.

At the same time, CBD has a profound effect on the human endocannabinoid system, which manages a variety of essential bodily processes including digestion. Some researchers believe that endocannabinoid deficiency could be one of the primary causes of both physical and mental health conditions, suggesting that taking CBD oil could offer a wide range of beneficial effects.

What research says about CBD for IBS

As an inflammatory disease that affects the digestive system, IBS is a prime target of natural therapies that provide anti-inflammatory benefits within the digestive tract. While we cannot provide medical advice or make claims regarding the usefulness of taking CBD for any condition, we can still examine the evidence that has been accumulated regarding the use of CBD in treating IBS.

Research into CBD for Inflammation

CBD has been researched extensively for its potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Scientists are keenly interested in determining the potential usefulness of CBD in relieving chronic inflammatory pain and the symptoms of inflammatory conditions like IBS.

Research into CBD for Gastrointestinal Conditions

Researchers have examined the potential usefulness of CBD as a natural modulator of your gut’s mucosal defense system, which plays a critical role in preventing the symptoms of IBS. Current research into the effects of CBD on the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is highly limited, but early results have been promising.

How much CBD oil should I take for IBS?

Different CBD oils contain different amounts of CBD, and each CBD ingestion method affects your body differently. If you decide to use CBD for IBS, however, you may want to start with a standard dose of 10-20 milligrams taken orally per day. In clinical studies, CBD doses as high as 1,500mg tincture which is 50mg of CBD per day have been shown to be well-tolerated in human subjects, but if you’d prefer to use CBD products as sparingly as possible, even a low dose might provide the beneficial effects you’re looking for.

How should I take CBD oil for the best results?

There are quite a few different ways you can take CBD, and some might be more effective for IBS than others:

CBD tinctures for IBS

As orally ingested CBD products, CBD tinctures deliver this cannabinoid directly into your digestive tract. Along the way, however, the CBD in your tincture will also be absorbed under your tongue, potentially limiting the amount of CBD that reaches your digestive system.

CBD capsules for IBS

CBD capsules pass down your esophagus before releasing CBD into your stomach. As a result, capsules might deliver CBD into your digestive tract more efficiently than other ingestion methods.

CBD edibles for IBS

CBD edibles are tasty and convenient, but a lot of the CBD they contain is absorbed into the lining of your mouth as you chew. IBS sufferers might be better off choosing CBD capsules instead.

CBD topicals for IBS

Water-based CBD topicals penetrate your skin and spread CBD throughout underlying tissues. However, topically applied CBD might not penetrate deeply enough to deliver significant concentrations of this cannabinoid into your digestive tract.

Can you rub CBD oil on your stomach?

When you experience abdominal pain due to irritable bowel syndrome, it’s only natural to try addressing the symptoms of this condition at their source. Oil-based CBD products, however, offer very poor skin penetration, so applying CBD oil directly to your stomach is unlikely to provide the results you desire. Use a water-based CBD topical formulation instead, or use an orally ingested CBD product that delivers this cannabinoid directly into your digestive tract.

Using CBD for IBS: The Bottom Line

There isn’t enough evidence to definitively determine whether CBD might help relieve the symptoms of IBS. What’s clear, however, is that every form of CBD is non-intoxicating and remarkably non-toxic, so there’s no reason you should avoid using CBD products as you pursue weight loss and make other lifestyle changes that might help manage IBS. Anyone who has this condition would prefer to treat IBS naturally, and IBS sufferers have nothing to lose by trying CBD oil for this uncomfortable and inconvenient condition.

9 Trusted CBD Brands That Source Organic Hemp & Provide Third Party Testing

Editor’s Note: When you make a purchase through the affiliate links in this article, you support Organic Authority in creating more awesome content. Rest assured our team spent hundreds of hours researching and selecting transparent CBD brands.

It seems that everyone is tuned into the magic of CBD, from your neighbor using it for better sleep to your coworker using it for chronic pain relief to the folks at the dog park helping Rusty tone down his anxiety. But what is this magic substance, and more importantly, which CBD brands can you trust?

We’ve already covered CBD health benefits and even did a roundup of FAQs about CBD oil. This guide identifies brands that are dedicated to sourcing organic ingredients, effective formulations, and implement best practices for quality control.

Contents

What You Need to Know

CBD is short for cannabidiol, one of the many cannabinoid compounds found naturally in marijuana and hemp. In the U.S. CBD products are made from industrial hemp (not Marijuana) and must contain less than 1% THC (the psychoactive compound found in Marijuana).

The research into safety and potential therapeutic benefits of CBD and other cannabinoids, while promising, is still under review. The FDA has stated that it will not allow products to be marketed or labeled as dietary supplements nor will it give the “Generally Recognized as Safe” (a.k.a GRAS) designation to CBD products until more research is completed.

If you see a brand tout their CBD oil as “proven by science” to address a particular disease, health condition or to provide a specific health benefit, they are asking for a warning letter from the FDA. At the moment, CBD can only be marketed and labeled for general wellness.

People need to know that hemp plants are “bioaccumulators”, meaning they are very effective at absorbing heavy metals and other chemical waste from the soil. This makes it imperative for consumers to pay attention to whether CBD companies source their hemp from certified organic hemp farms.

As past tests and warnings issued by the FDA have shown, not all CBD brands follow the rules and some products don’t even contain the levels of CBD stated on the label (or any CBD at all).

If you are looking to use CBD to help you sleep better, treat anxiety, or manage chronic pain – amongst other uses – consult a medical professional.

If you do end up shopping for CBD online and are wondering which brand is best, read the labels and look for organic certifications. Also review the brand’s website for information about their production practices. At the end of the day, if they don’t provide third party lab test results for each batch of their product, look elsewhere.

CBD Brands We Like

Our criteria for picking brands were developed through consultation with industry experts, reading reputable resources online and culling the internet for popular brands to evaluate. When we reached out to CBD brands, we asked about their sourcing, production and quality control practices and whether they had certifcations to verify their claims. We also checked for warning recalls and letters from the FDA as well as for third-party lab results from independant third parties.

Below you will find CBD brands that source organic hemp and follow FDA guidance on Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). These brands can back up the quality and safety of their products through Organic Certifications and by providing third party test results for every product they sell.

1. Palmetto Harmony

USDA Organic Certified – An industry leader in formulation and transparency.

Palmetto Harmony

How’s this for transparency? In addition to being certified USDA Organic, all Palmetto Harmony products have 3rd party ISO certified lab tests available upon request. Their production facilities are certified for Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) per the FDA’s guidelines. Their plants and topical indgredients are all organically grown within the US. Naturally, it’s ingredients are Non-GMO and contain no synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides are used in our grows.

About Palmetto Harmony

Founded by Janel Ralph in 2015, the company’s origin is rooted in a mother’s desire to help alleviate her daughter’s debilitating seizures. Traditional pharmaceuticals had failed her daughter and the lack of regulation on hemp derived CBD products only led her to impure and ineffective formulations.

Today, Palmetto Harmony sets the gold standard for transparency and best practices, as they are USDA Certified Organic – a rare accomplishment in the industry. Vertically integrated from seed to sale they use combative pests in lieu of chemicals as pesticides (remember that hemp is highly effective at absorbing chemicals from the soil). Every batch they produce is tested for not only cannabinoid content and terpenes, but also mold, pesticides, heavy metals, microbials, herbicides and residual solvents. Their facilities are also certified for Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) as laid out by the FDA – something not all companies can claim.

2. Ojai Energetics

The fastest acting CBD Oil we could find!

Ojai Energetics – Full SpectrumHemp Elixir

This is one of the most fast acting and bioavailable full spectrum hemp cbd oils we could find. The formulation is water soluble (which helps with absorption) and made without synthetics or synthetically modified compounds. You feel its effects within seconds rather than several minutes.

Each serving (1ml) contains 8.3mg of CBD and a bottle contains 30 servings.

Cost Breakdown:

  • $2.50 per serving (before tax)
  • $0.30 per mg of CBD (before tax)

Bundled options bring down cost per serving.

About Ojai Energetics

Ojai Energetics stands out for their formulation. They produce water-soluble CBD tinctures made with organic hemp. This method makes the CBD more bioavailable than fat-soluble CBD products. The company claims that because CBD oils are fat soluble, 90% of what you take doesn’t survive your harsh liver and stomach enzymes in your body. In fact, if you eat 20mg of a regular CBD oil, only 2mg of CBD gets absorbed. That’s where their water soluble formulation cracks the code.

“Our product takes about 30 seconds to begin reaping the benefits, whereas a regular CBD that’s fat soluble takes about 30 minutes,” explains Will Kleidon, CEO of Ojai Energetics, who notes that clinical studies proving this are in the works.

A third-party lab, StepOne Health, has already performed one clinical test, showing that the product contributed to “marked improvements” in three major inflammatory markers for heart disease in 15 individuals who began taking the product.

“We saw marked improvements of between 12 to 15 percent in all three markers,” writes StepOne. “Having had high aspirations of a three to four percent improvement, the actual results are astounding.”

While all of the ingredients used by Ojai Energetics for its oils are certified organic, the product itself cannot be for one simple reason.

“No one set up a CO2 extraction that’s certified organic,” explains Kleidon, who expresses confidence that this will happen within the year. “As soon as that comes on, we’ll be the only water-soluble, full-spectrum, certified organic CBD.”

The company performs third-party batch testing for every batch to ensure that the product is devoid of heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, and microbials and that it contains the appropriate amount of CBD.

“That’s really important to us,” he continues. “Full transparency and only sourcing clean product every single time.”

During the extraction process, they use environmentally-friendly alcohol or CO2 extraction systems. Bluebird’s final products are made in accordance with Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMPs). They test every batch using third party labs and make the results available on demand.

In Consumer Lab’s most recent report (paywall), Bluebird Botanical Hemp Classic 6x was the most highly concentrated (4.8 percent CBD) and least expensive (per mg of CBD). Other brands tested at 0.8 to the 1.7 percent of CBD and were relatively more expensive per mg of CBD sold.

What sets them apart is that they own their entire supply chain. From soil-to-oil, they are able to ensure sustainable and organic farming practices, clean extraction and formulation, and consistent production quality because they control every aspect of the supply chain.

Each batch is tested by an independant lab for purity and to ensure that it contains the promised amount of CBD. The company’s commitment to consistency is aided by its closed-loop system which, Huerter explains, allows Pure Spectrum’s products to easily boast the same flavor profile, the same cannabinoid profile, and the same terpine profile in every batch.

“We try to mirror the regulated cannabis products, here in Colorado,” he says. “We try to mirror their testing procedures, and voluntarily do that to ourselves to make sure the customer knows what they’re getting.”

Pure Spectrum is also working to grow the CBD industry and ensure that farmers that follow sustainable practices get their fair share of the hemp economy.

For this company, transparency has always been key.

“We’re one of the few companies that, from day one, told you exactly how much CBD you got per serving,” explains Stuart Tomc, Vice President of Human Nutrition at CV Sciences. “There’s no reason to hide what it is you’re bringing to the market unless you’re not prepared for the inevitable regulatory compliance battle.”

Made with hemp grown in Europe, PlusCBD Oil is tested in a state-of-the-art in-house laboratory for CBD levels; these findings are then validated by a third-party lab, which also tests to ensure that all Plus CBD Oil products are free of pesticides, fungicides, plant growth regulators, and residual solvents. A third lab uses advanced testing methods to ensure that all batches are free of heavy metals.

“Just like wine,” says Tomc. “Every single batch is going to be different.”

How to Pick the Right CBD Products

Sadly but not surprisingly not every product claiming to contain CBD has the percentage they claim—and some may contain no CBD at all.

As with supplements, the FDA does not review CBD products before they hit the shelves. At this time, CBD oil quality is not regulated in most states. Only states that have legalized marijuana for adult use have regulated laboratory testing for CBD sold in dispensaries. Currently, these states are Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, California, Maine, Massachusetts, and Nevada, as well as Washington D.C.

The FDA conducted a laboratory test in 2015 and 2016 to determine the percentage of CBD in certain products marketed and sold as containing CBD. Several of the brands they tested were found to contain absolutely no CBD oil.

“If a product says it contains a certain amount of CBD, it may be more, it may be less,” cautions Joseph Nathan, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Long Island University.

When purchasing CBD, therefore, you can’t be afraid to ask questions. Here are some good ones recommended by our experts to help you suss out the brands worth spending money on.

1. Understand Best Sourcing Practices

CBD oil companies should be able to offer you clear traceability with regards to the origin of the hemp used in the product, which should be grown organically and be pesticide-free.

“I think the first thing to do is ask the manufacturer of the product that you’re buying where their CBD is coming from,” says Caitlin Moakley, lead buyer and manager of the Body Care department at Cambridge Naturals. “If they can answer that question for you, you’re on the right track.”

Stormy Simon, former CEO of Overstock.com turned cannabis champion, notes that this is the first thing you should look for on the label.

“There are farms in the U.S. that are certified by state departments of agriculture, and I would trust those,” she says.

Hemp produced in Europe is generally of good quality, according to Evan Kopelson, who has been a medical cannabis industry consultant for the past eight years. He notes in an article on Linkedin that until recently, when the USDA began allowing hemp to be certified organic, buying from Europe was the only way to be sure that CBD oil was pesticide-free. While laws have since allowed American companies to certify their hemp organic, some great CBD oil companies still source from Europe, so don’t count them out of your search.

2. Understanding How It’s Made

CBD oil is not all extracted in the same way.

“When it comes to extraction, there are multiple processes being used,” explains Simon. “One is with butane, and the other with propane. Those aren’t my top preferences.”

Kopelson notes that butane is not allowed for use in the extraction of medical cannabis in California, though it is allowed for recreational manufacturing.

“There are two processes to look for,” Simon continues. “One uses an organic, pharmaceutical-grade ethanol. Ethanol is considered the safest method of extraction for human use. The other method extracts with CO2, which is more of a refined, expensive process that ensures the CBD holds its purity throughout.”

Choosing CO2 or ethanol-extracted CBD oils, then, is your best bet.

You should also keep an eye out for “full-spectrum” oils, which contain not just CBD, but a full range of cannabinoids – including trace amounts of THC. This won’t be enough to make you high (and shouldn’t even be enough to show up on drug tests), but it will allow you to reap the benefits of not just CBD but the “full spectrum” of cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant, producing what some experts have begun calling “the entourage effect.”

“It’s been shown that THC and CBD, when combating the myriad of symptoms and disease states, have a synergistic relationship,” explains Steve Looi, Director of Origination at White Sheep Corp., a Toronto-based cannabis commercial operator and strategic investor with holdings in Canada and the US. “The compounds are more effective in each other’s presence than they would be if taken alone.”

3. How to Look at Lab Tests

CBD oil companies should also perform regular lab tests to ensure that their CBD contains everything it should – and nothing it shouldn’t.

“If a company is confident in their product, and if they really want customers to believe in their product, they should be able to provide that information for you,” says Moakley.

The certificate of analysis or lab report will show you several things: first, that the oil does contain the amount of CBD the company claims it does, and second, that it is devoid of pesticides, herbicides, and solvents.

“Hemp is a bioaccumulator,” explains Chris Cox, founder and CEO of PlentyPharma. “So it picks up heavy metals, pesticides, anything in the soil, it could pick up, and that could end up in the final product.”

The lab test will also let you know if the CBD oil has been decarboxylated, a process of gently heating the oil in order to convert CBDa and THCa molecules into CBD and THC.

“You won’t always see the word ‘decarboxylated’ on a CBD oil company’s website,” warns Kopelson, though you will be able to see it on a lab test.

“When you look at the lab test results for your CBD oil,” writes Kopelson, “You can tell the oil is decarboxylated if you have all four ingredients (CBDa, CBD, THCa, and THC) with the CBD amount being much higher than the CBDa and the THC amount being much higher than the THCa.”

Most good brands will not just provide one set of lab tests, but rather will test each individual batch to ensure that the same standards are upheld every time.

“Continually having those lab results done on the raw oil and of course on a batch basis allows us to be completely transparent,” says Cox, who notes that PlentyPharma’s end goal is to eventually be able to allow users to search their batch number via a database directly on the company website.

Where to Buy CBD Oil

Depending on where you live, you may be able to buy CBD oil in a dispensary. This is Nathan’s recommendation, whenever possible, as it allows you the highest level of traceability.

“My suggestion would be to stick with products that are dispensed by dispensaries that are licensed by the state in which you live,” says Nathan. “I think just purchasing CBD oil that’s sold online or elsewhere – you’re taking a chance.”

This isn’t an option for most people, however. According to Brightfield Group, a market research firm based in Chicago, in 2007, only seven percent of people bought their CBD oil from dispensaries. Most – a whopping 65 percent – purchased the product online.

Six percent of people, meanwhile, opted for health shops, while 21 percent purchased their CBD oil in smoke shops, and less than one percent purchased CBD oil from doctor’s offices.

If you cannot gain access to a dispensary, you’ll need to do more homework to ensure that your CBD oil lives up to what it says on the package. Luckily, we’ve done that for you.

Before Taking CBD Oil

Always consult your doctor before attempting to treat a health condition with any supplement, including CBD oil. Once your doctor has signed off – and you’ve found a CBD oil that you can trust – be sure that you follow dosage instructions on the product labels or by your doctor.

The popularity of cannabidiol (CBD) oil surged in recent years as evolving research supported its calming and pain-relieving properties. It’s readily available everywhere, from grocery store checkout lines to big box stores to online boutiques, but not all CBD oil is created equal. “Different manufacturers have different extraction processes,” says Stacy Green, M.D., a functional and integrative medicine practitioner in Boulder, Colorado. “So when you buy CBD oil and I buy CBD oil, we may be getting very different things.”

I recently integrated Lazarus Naturals’ THC-Free High-Potency CBD Oil Tincture into my daily wellness routine to gauge whether its perceived benefits are worth the additional monthly expense. I opted for the blood orange-flavored tincture and took it twice daily for two weeks. Here’s a review of my experience.

Summary Box

Lazarus Naturals THC-Free High-Potency CBD Oil Tincture

  • Cost: The $70 price tag seemed high to me, but the 60-milliliter bottle does contain 3,000 milligrams of CBD.
  • Potency: With 50 milligrams of CBD per milliliter dropper, this CBD oil isn’t especially potent, which I liked as a new user. However, it meant I had to consume more CBD oil each day to achieve any noticeable results.
  • Quality: I love the company’s transparency, listing third-party test results on its website, as well as the sourcing of the ingredients the team harvests themselves to produce all Lazarus Naturals products.
  • Great flavor
  • Minimal ingredients
  • The company’s farm-to-front door philosophy
  • The high price tag
  • The small bottle

About Lazarus Naturals

Lazarus Naturals is a CBD oil manufacturer with headquarters in Seattle and Portland, Oregon. All of the company’s tincture ingredients are grown, extracted and isolated in house, and they use biodegradable and recycled packaging. Each batch of products undergoes third-party testing before they’re sent from the farm to customers. The lab tests for residual solvents, heavy metals, pesticides, microbial impurities and potency, and all results are available on the company website under the “product details” heading for each product.

I purchased the 60-milliliter bottle of Lazarus Naturals THC-Free High-Potency CBD Oil Tincture in the blood orange flavor, which retails for $70. The bottle contains a total of 3,000 milligrams of CBD, or 50 milligrams per milliliter dropper serving, which translates to about $1.17 per serving. I was hesitant to spend so much money on a product entirely new to me, but I took the plunge based on the purported health benefits of CBD oil.

Potency

The directions on the Lazarus Naturals CBD oil packaging instructed me to start with a low dose of 25 milligrams, or half a dropper, and see how my body responded. I waited two hours as instructed, but I didn’t feel any noticeable difference after my initial dose. Although I was disappointed, I decided to try again before bed. Unfortunately, I still felt nothing, so I gradually increased my dose size to 75 milligrams over the course of the next few days.

By the seventh day of my trial, I began to notice subtle results, including a mellow, blissed-out feeling akin to drinking half a glass of wine or a very weak cocktail with dinner.

“Your body’s receptor system is different from person to person,” says Dr. Green. “The way you metabolize all drugs has an effect on that as well. I’ve had a range of patients saying, ‘No, that doesn’t do anything for me,’ or, ‘It started to work, but then it stopped.’ I’ve heard it all. That tells me not so much that this is snake oil, but that there are really complex systems in play that we simply don’t understand yet.”

Is cbd oil good for candida

CBD Oil for Candida

Candida is a type of fungus that causes fungal infections, also known as Candidiasis. Candida can affect just about any part of the human body, and the infection has different names and symptoms depending on its location.

The different types include:

  • Thrush (mouth).
  • Cutaneous Candidiasis (skin).
  • Onychomycosis (nails).
  • Yeast infection (vagina/penis).
  • Invasive Candidiasis (organs/bones).

Depending on the location, Candida may cause rashes, fatigue, digestive issues, and even seasonal allergies. Candidiasis is one of the most common types of yeast infections, and although it isn’t severely dangerous when addressed properly, it can cause a lot of discomfort.

Does CBD Oil Kill Candida?

The treatment for a Candida infection can involve multiple components, but one of the most important steps is to kill or prevent further growth of the fungus. Because of this, many people wonder whether CBD oil is a good treatment or if it can kill Candida. Cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, CBN, and THC are known to have natural antifungal properties, to different degrees, so it’s inevitable that this question would arise.

The truth is that, although cannabinoids have antifungal properties, we don’t know very much about them. The antifungal activity of these compounds is a relatively new interest in the scientific community, and only limited research has been done so far. Of this research, most has focused on THC rather than other cannabinoids. This research has shown promising results, but as of yet, we can’t say for certain whether CBD or other hemp-based compounds kill fungi like Candida.

What we can say, however, is that CBD’s antifungal properties and antifungal support are very valuable against a Candida infection. Other naturally occurring antifungal compounds, like antifungal terpenes, are more effective when used in combination with CBD. This makes CBD oil a valuable addition to Candidiasis treatment.

How Can CBD Help with Candida?

CBD can also help with Candida infections in ways other than directly killing the fungus. Thanks to the many beneficial properties of CBD oil, it can treat the symptoms of different types of Candidiasis at the same time as its antifungal properties are treating the source of the problem. For example, CBD is very well-known for its anti-inflammatory properties and pain-reduction properties. This makes it effective at combating the primary symptoms of many types of Candida infections. CBD oil can be used to relieve the redness and discomfort of Cutaneous Candidiasis (Candida infection of the skin), to relieve the pain or itchiness of yeast infections (Candida infections of the penis or vagina), or to improve the digestive issues caused by Invasive Candidiasis (Candida infection of the internal organs).

CBD oil can also help with some types of Candida infections by modulating the body’s immune response. In people with a weakened immune system, Candida infections can spread and persistently impact many different parts of the body over a long period of time. Some studies show that CBD can be used to improve immune function in compromised people, which may prevent or mitigate this systemic type of Candidiasis.

Types of CBD Oil for Candida

The best way to use CBD oil for Candida depends on the type of Candida infection in question. It’s important to choose the appropriate type of CBD treatment from the many different types available, which include:

  • CBD oil drops
  • CBD oil sprays
  • CBD oil capsules
  • CBD tinctures
  • CBD gummies
  • CBD vape pens
  • CBD creams
  • CBD lotions

In general, a good rule of thumb is to use the type of CBD that will treat the affected area most directly. For example, putting CBD oil drops into your mouth is the most direct way to treat thrush (Candidiasis in the mouth). A topical form of CBD, like a CBD oil cream or lotion, is the most direct way to treat Candidiasis on the skin.

You can also choose the type of CBD treatment you want to use based on your specific symptoms. For example, if you are experiencing chronic pain anywhere in the body as a result of Candidiasis, then an edible form of CBD like gummies or capsules may be the best choice because these forms of CBD provide long-lasting effects. On the other hand, if your Candida infection is clearing up but still experiences occasional flare-ups, then a fast-acting but short-term type of CBD like vape pens may be a better choice.

Conclusion

CBD is an incredibly popular natural treatment for a very wide variety of ailments, including fungal infections like Candidiasis. When you look at the anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, pain-relieving, and other properties of CBD, it’s easy to understand why. However, since CBD treatment is still a relatively new area with limited research to back it up, it’s also important to be careful with dosage and product quality, as well as considering how CBD fits in with the other aspects of your Candidiasis treatment.

We hope that this guide has given you all of the information you need to feel confident in trying CBD oil for Candida infections. You can check out our other articles, including CBD product reviews, to find the best products for your individual needs. Be sure to discuss CBD oil with your doctor before adding it to your treatment plan, especially if you are already using other Candidiasis treatments that may interact with CBD.

Is cbd oil good for candida

Having recently stumbled upon CBD oil on my quest to find relief for my debilitating recurring headaches, anxiety and depression I did some research and found out that CBD oil also has antifungal properties.

What is CBD oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is made from the hemp plant, but unlike Cannabis/ marijuana (which active ingredient THC gets you ‘high’) Cbd oil has no mind-altering but a therapeutic effect for certain conditions.

CBD oil is also not to be mistaken with Hemp oil (which is made from hemp seeds rather the flower and stem of the plant.)

I made the mistake of buying hemp oil at first and was wondering what all the fuss was about because I noticed absolutely zero benefit from taking it. Big surprise there! That is not to say hemp oil isn’t healthy, it’s great – it’s full of poly-unsaturated fatty acids which are essential for many important processes in your body… Hemp oil just isn’t pain & anxiety relieving (which is what I was looking for. That’s all!)

What are the health benefits of Cannabidiol (CBD)?

CBD hemp oil is used to…

  1. reduce pain (for instance joint or back pain, as well as fibro, MS and arthritis pain)
  2. soothe anxiety
  3. get relief from migraines
  4. boost your mood/ get you out of depression
  5. help you sleep & cure insomnia
  6. control appetite
  7. heal your skin
  8. suppress nausea (popular with cancer fighters to help with the side effects of the chemo)

How does it work?

  • CBD oil is highly anti-inflammatory and able to inactivate pain receptors in your body.
  • It also has a balancing effect on the immune system with is highly beneficial for people with autoimmune diseases.
  • CBD oil also naturally boost the ‘happy hormones’ in your body like dopamine and serotonin. That not only allows you to feel better, but you also don’t have to rely so much on strong over the counter or prescription pain killers that have copious side effects and may not even successfully take the pain away.

CBD Oil and Candida – is it a valid treatment option?

You can get quite scientific about the antifungal/ Candida-fighting properties. The gist is that CBD oil contains some antimicrobial factors as well as terpene caryophyllene oxide which is a potent antifungal agent. Apparently in scientific studies the effect was comparable to pharmaceutical antifungal medication.

Note: At the time of trying CBD oil I had already brought my Candida issues under control so I cannot comment on the effect it has on Candida. But I have no reason to believe it would not work due to its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties.

My experience with CBD oil

There’s no getting away from it — CBD oil is expensive. You can easily pay a few hundred bucks for a 100 ml bottle. I bought the smallest one available (30 ml) and it still cost me 84 UK pounds with postage.

Based on my internet research it looks like you can estimate that you need 5-25 mg per day if not 40-60 mg or more if you have excruciating pain or regular migraines (but please do check with your doctor to find the right dose for you). So, at that rate a small bottle would only last you 1 week, 1 month if you are lucky.

Hence, I only ever took 1-2 droppers full once to twice per day as and when my anxiety/ headaches showed up.

I bought the mint & chocolate flavoured MCT version (‘everyday’ is the lowest strength they sell’) — luvely flavour.

There’s also a plain olive oil version.

The MCT is meant to work faster, but I personally find the MCT oil a little aggravating to the stomach (I got the same unpleasant sensation when I tried ‘Bulletproof coffee’ that was upgraded with MCT oil. I wonder if the olive oil version is gentler on the stomach.

I took the Cbd oil on the onset of a migraine attack and when I felt anxious and overwhelmed. I can’t say it had an amazingly pain reducing effect at the low dose I took it at. But I also did not get a full-blown migraine, so perhaps it was working.

The second time I took it I also happened to drink green tea matcha maca latte (perhaps the antioxidant super power had a synergistic effect?), and that seemed to have done the trick – I felt clear, optimistic and productive all day.

Is it legal?

CBD oil is not legal in all countries or states, so be sure to investigate if you can buy it where you live.

Where can you buy it?

To guarantee the effectiveness of the CBD oil the percentage of the active ingredients must be quite high. I’m not an expert, but I recommend comparing a few different companies, and also seeing if your friends, colleagues or family can recommend a reputable brand. The manufacturing process is also important, as well as the soil it is grown on, and you obviously don’t want any pesticides sprayed on the crop, etc. I bought mine on recommendation from a friend from cbdoilsuk. The brand is Charlotte’s Web (it’s a US brand — and no, I am not in any way affiliated with them and do not get any commission or discounts for recommending them here, dang!).

Recap

Unlike hemp oil or cannabis/ marijuana (which is actually still illegal in a lot of countries and states), CBD oil has medicinal properties and can be especially effective at relieving pain & anxiety, as well as bringing down inflammation and boosting your mood. It also has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties which makes it an amazing secret weapon in your Candida fighting arsenal.

It’s slightly on the pricey side, but overall thumbs up from me. If you can’t afford it – don’t worry though. There are plenty of other natural antifungals that you can use to fight Candida that are very inexpensive, like oil of oregano for instance. After all I overcame my Candida issues without the help of Cbd oil too. The cannabidiol oil just has some added properties. But if you don’t have an autoimmune disease or chronic pain then you might not need those additional benefits anyway.

Cbd oil for energy dosage

Can You Take CBD for an Energy Boost? (Spoiler Alert: Totally.)

Any coffee lovers in the house? If you start every day with at least one cup you’re like 64% of Americans . But admit it: Sometimes you’re still running low on energy in the afternoons.

When you work hard, play hard, parent hard, and celebrate hard, it comes at the expense of your energy levels. We’ve all been there — when it feels like no matter how much coffee you drink, you’re still struggling to get through the day.

So, what if there was another way to increase energy and motivation? There is, but those CBD gummies you bought for pain or sleep, for example, are probably not the first thing that comes to mind when you’re feeling exhausted.

But CBD energy itself should be!

Cannabidiol (CBD) products are trending due to their ability to help treat a range of issues, such as anxiety and pain. However, as researchers discover more of the benefits of CBD and how the endocannabinoid system works, some believe that it may also offer a boost in energy and be useful as a safe, natural stimulant.

You’ve likely heard a lot about how CBD promotes relaxation and can help you sleep soundly but less about taking CBD for energy. However, CBD’s link to increased energy and better focus is a benefit that’s too good to ignore. Several studies have found that it may be the natural boost you’ve been looking for — here we’ll break them down for you.

Disclaimer: This is not medical advice. Ask your doctor before starting new medications or treatments.

CBD Energy Boosts Your Brain in Natural Ways

Unlike coffee, CBD doesn’t make you feel energized by pumping you full of caffeine (potentially with the jitters as side effects). Instead, a dose of CBD is thought to support the areas of your brain that are responsible for keeping you bright-eyed and bushy-tailed when you need it without caffeine’s side effects.

In a study published in the Behavioral Neuroscience journal, researchers administered CBD to certain areas of the brain. They found that it activated receptors in the areas responsible for waking us up . Another study tested the same theory on rats with similar results; CBD activated neurons in the areas of the brain responsible for alertness .

And in a study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, researchers tested how both THC and CBD affected nocturnal sleep as well as early-morning performance. They found that at certain doses, CBD counteracted the sedative-like effects of THC during sleep, making the participants more alert during the night.

But isn’t CBD also touted as a sleep aid? It can be confusing to consider putting CBD in something like coffee or energy drinks, or even to think about using it for energy at all.

It works because CBD and other cannabinoids help the ECS (endocannabinoid system) achieve homeostasis, an overall balance, in the body. This goes for the nervous system and all of the major bodily systems.

Dr. Bonni Goldstein, medical director for Canna-Centers, explains further, telling Marie Claire that CBD in low doses can act as a stimulant while CBD in high doses can act as a sedative. Some people have even started experimenting with CBD-infused coffee, finding that it gives them more energy without the jitters and anxiousness.

According to Jane West, also interviewed for the Marie Claire piece, who says her team is “drawing on a wealth of anecdotal evidence,” CBD in your java can really take the edge off. “My colleagues, friends, and I have found that CBD-infused coffee largely does away with the anxiety and acid belly typically associated with coffee,” she says. “That makes sense, because research suggests CBD has anti-anxiety and [anti-nausea] effects. We’ve also found that compared to the coffee we reach for regularly, testers experience a less jittery, elevated burst of energy after drinking CBD-infused coffee.”

And we’ve all had the experience of trying an especially uplifting cannabis strain. Much of this kind of mood-enhancing effect comes from terpenes, which are also present in hemp plants. High-quality, pesticide-free CBD products from hemp extract can offer the same natural boost.

Does CBD Give You Energy or Make You Tired?

Great question, actually.

The evidence on CBD for focus is really still developing, but here’s what we know so far. Although CBD does not typically promote feeling wide awake, it does improve other issues that can, left untreated, sap your energy and make you tired. In this way, CBD can genuinely help you focus and feel better-rested—if only indirectly.

CBD is a great solution for symptoms of stress and anxiety that keep you feeling tired. For example, anxiety disorders can cause difficulty concentrating and produce feelings of fatigue. And CBD may also help relieve social anxiety and PTSD symptoms, both of which can cause anyone to feel tired and lose focus.

CBD is well-known for its ability to help treat sleep issues for many people. But how does that help you if you’re already losing focus and feeling tired? Well, if you never get enough sleep to start with, you’re doomed to feel fatigued and struggle with focus. If CBD helps you get enough rest and regulate your sleep cycle, that problem is solved.

Similarly, CBD oil can help treat pain, including the kinds of chronic pain and inflammation that can cause so much fatigue and challenge your ability to focus. By helping to reduce pain, CBD may help you increase your energy levels and focus.

Another thing to consider regarding cannabidiol and focus is extra ingredients. Most products use some sort of carrier oils such as hempseed oil, MCT oil, cranberry oil, grapeseed oil, or EVOO. They may also use flavorings and terpenes, or even herbal supplements to boost energy and fight fatigue.

Finally, don’t forget other ways to boost energy, focus, and wellness naturally, including getting plenty of exercise, supplementing vitamin B12, avoiding stress, and eating well. And if concentration and fatigue are a constant battle for you, talk to a healthcare provider. CBD is amazing for your over well-being, but it’s not a cure-all.

How CBD Gives Your Body More Energy

CBD energy doesn’t come in an instant burst like what you get from a Red Bull energy drink or cup of coffee, but the effects it has on your body create an all-natural, sustained boost of energy that lasts longer and is healthier for you.

CBD and the endocannabinoid system (ECS): Full spectrum CBD products work on humans because they’re loaded with cannabinoids. Cannabinoids interact with the ECS to control appetite, mood, memory, and sleep. When these are all functioning at their top level, your baseline wellness level will be higher and allow you to put more energy into things that matter, not the things that aren’t working.

(If the full-spectrum moniker is worrying you, don’t let it. Cannabis products naturally contain some level of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), but legal CBD products must be harvested from the right kind of hemp plants and contain less than 0.3% THC to comply with guidelines from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). And if even that seems like too much, you can still use broad-spectrum CBD products that have lots of cannabinoids like CBG and CBN but are still THC-free.)

Improves focus: Many people report burnout from workouts and everyday stress as things that get in the way of their productivity and focus. CBD is a natural calmer that resets your body and mind, so everyday stress and workplace anxiety melt away. This allows your mind to focus on the task at hand, not the stress, which is an energy zapper.

Melts away pain: Some users of CBD tinctures, edibles, CBD capsules, and topical CBD products have great success with minor aches and pains. The exhaustion of dealing with chronic pain saps your energy, so CBD can help in this way, too!

CBD Works Double Duty to Make You More Productive

Being the overachiever that it is, CBD doesn’t just support wakefulness. It can also increase motivation by quieting the chaotic, unproductive thoughts flying around in your head, putting you in a state of calm, and giving you more mental clarity. The result? You’re more equipped to concentrate on your to-do list and less likely to distract yourself with funny memes on your Instagram feed.

Which Strain of CBD is Best for Energy?

Just like with regular cannabis, when it comes to strains and CBD, there is plenty of misinformation out there. When it comes to CBD and energy levels, it’s far more about the whole CBD product. What is the entire breakdown of cannabinoids and terpenes? What other herbal ingredients are in there?

That said, there are certain strains that many users like more than others for an energy boost. Lifter is a favorite, as are Harlequin and Hawaiian Haze. These are both high CBD hemp strains that can keep you feeling awake and refreshed. Or just look for one of your favorite uplifting cannabis strains in a high-CBD version.

How to Start Using CBD for Energy

Ready to optimize your daily energy levels with CBD? It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.

  1. Find the right low-dose CBD product. Get what’s right for you – like a CBD oil tincture or CBD capsule .
  2. Incorporate CBD into your morning routine. Take CBD with your coffee, morning glass of water, or in your smoothie. Or, keep it in your car, purse, or even on your desk for easy access throughout the day.
  3. Make it a habit. Take CBD every day for it to build up in your body and have the most optimal effect.

With its growing popularity, there’s no doubt that scientists will continue to study how CBD and the rest of the cannabis plant can help us all become better humans and live happier healthier lives. In the meantime, try using CBD during the day to help naturally stimulate your brain and give you the tools you need to be more productive and present.

CBD Oil Dosage: How Much Should You Take?

Cannabidiol or CBD is an active compound found in hemp and cannabis. Unlike Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, CBD doesn’t have addictive and intoxicating effects. That’s why CBD oil is a preferred alternative option for treating a wide array of medical conditions, such as pain, insomnia, anxiety, and seizure disorders. Keith of The Hempire has had specific studies on the effects of CBD oil on mental health. However, the question is how much should you take? In this post, learn more about the right CBD dosage so you can apply what’s best for your needs.

General CBD Dosage Considerations

Since CBD is obtained or extracted from a natural plant, it’s generally considered safe to consume. Like any other herbal plant, CBD is a plant medicine, with therapeutic benefits. The right CBD dosage depends on a lot of factors that affect your bodily response, immediate effects, and outcomes.

Here are the important factors when determining the right CBD dosage for you:

  • Major complaint
  • Existing medical conditions
  • Body weight
  • Body’s response to CBD
  • Allergy or sensitivity

Standard CBD Dosage

The standard CBD dosage ranges from 10 mg to 100 mg per day. Standard doses are applicable for treating pain, infection, inflammation, arthritis, anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia, autism, autoimmune disorders, multiple sclerosis, and other health conditions. It’s also the suggested dose for weight loss.

Here are the recommended standard CBD dosage guidelines:

  • CBD dose per day: 45 mg to 60 mg.
  • Use 15% or 20% CBD oil. One drop of the 15% CBD oil has 5 mg of CBD, and one drop of the 20% oil contains 6.7 mg of CBD.
  • For the 15% CBD oil: three drops thrice a day for a total of 45 mg of CBD daily.
  • For the 20% CBD oil: three drops thrice a day for a 60mg of CBD daily.

Staggered Dosage

Gradually increasing CBD dose or dose staggering is generally recommended for first-time users. One study points out that staggering drug dose is an effective way to reduce drug interactions, which also applies to CBD dosage.

Here are the essential benefits of CBD dose staggering:

  • Assess the initial effects or body reactions of CBD, most especially among first-time users.
  • Find out if you have allergy or sensitivity to cannabis products.
  • Precisely determine the right amount of CBD oil that fits your needs.

CBD Microdosing

The Father of Microdosing is Dr. Albert Hofmann, a Swiss chemist that first synthesized LSD and lived up to 102 years old. His long life was associated with his minuscule LSD doses during the last 20 years of his life. Microdosing complies with the medical standards of starting low and doing it slow. It aims to manipulate cellular receptors to gain the desired physiologic responses or therapeutic effects with less doses.

Here are the general CBD microdosing guidelines:

  • CBD dose per day: 0.5 mg to 20 mg for stress, sleep, nausea, headache, mood disorders, PTSD, and metabolic disorders. This CBD dose is also applicable as a daily dietary supplement.
  • Use 5% CBD oil for microdose. One drop of 5% CBD oil contains 1.67 mg of CBD. Taking three drops thrice daily will give you 15 mg of CBD, which is the average recommended dose per day.
  • Make dosage adjustments according to your tolerance level.

CBD Macro-dosing

CBD macro-dosing or therapeutic dosing involves high-range CBD doses of 50 mg to 800 mg of CBD per day. It is recommended for treating seizures disorders, like epilepsy, cancer, liver disease, and other severe, life-threatening medical conditions.

CBD Oil Dosage Guidelines

Every person is different, that’s why you have to find the right CBD dose for you. The average CBD dose is 25 mg for most people. For first-time users, it’s best to start with the lowest dose and increase slowly until signs and symptoms improve. For treating medical conditions, it’s always advisable to consult your doctor before consuming CBD.

Here are the different methods of consuming CBD:

  • Oral Administration: CBD is not absorbed into the bloodstream. Expect to feel the effects or benefits of CBD about an hour after intake.
  • Sublingual Administration: It usually takes 20 minutes for the effects to kick in when taking CBD oil under the tongue.
  • Smoking CBD: The absorption of CBD via the respiratory system provides rapid relief. It’s highly recommended for those who prefer immediate relief and can’t tolerate oral and sublingual CBD administration.
  • Vaping CBD: Vaping devices are now available which are specifically designed for CBD use, ranging from e-liquid pens, portable vaporizers, to desktop units. This method of consuming CBD oil is recommended for medical patients.

Conclusion

The dose of CBD oil you need depends on your body chemistry. The effects and benefits of CBD hemp oil are influenced by the manner of administration and your body’s response to a particular dose. For treatment of medical conditions, seeking a doctor’s advice is highly recommended for the best results.

Hemp oil creams for pain relief cbd

Top 10 Best CBD Creams For Pain – Top Picks For Seniors

CBD, which stands for Cannabidiol, is an extract of industrial hemp. Although an essential component of medical marijuana, it is directly derived from the Cannabis sativa plant — a cousin of the marijuana plant — and by itself does not cause a “high.”

CBD creams can be very productive in dealing with arthritis, chronic pain, general aches and pains, and common muscle and joint fatigue. The cream base works as a carrier agent, often with additional natural ingredients and essential oils to smoothly apply to affected areas.

A CBD topical differs from using CBD oils orally in that you can pinpoint target areas. CBD topicals might be a solution for temporary relief from chronic joint or muscle pain from arthritis, or general aches and pain from daily activities such as garden work or an exercise class. CBD is known to have possible beneficial and anti-inflammatory properties, and you can find a wide array of topical CBD products on the market. Some topical CBD products include CBD salve, CBD bath bombs, and CBD face creams. In this guide, we will focus on CBD creams that aid in pain relief for seniors.

What Are the Best CBD Creams?

In shopping for a pain relief CBD cream, it’s crucial to take into consideration the potency, CBD source, where it was grown, additional ingredients (stick to natural and organic ingredients as much as possible), and price. When it comes to the CBD source, you’ll often see terms such as full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate, which refers to how the oil is extracted. While isolate and broad-spectrum ensure the oils used do not contain THC (which is the chemical attributed to the “high” given in smoking marijuana), full spectrum contains all the cannabinoids, including THC. Research has shown that THC and CBD work better together than not. However, any full-spectrum product will only contain 0.3 percent THC or less. Also, as we have pointed out, using a topical CBD product will not enter the bloodstream or cause a “high.”

The following products have been reviewed specifically for seniors, taking into consideration possible side effects and potential interactions with certain medical conditions.

While we have been focusing on CBD creams for this guide, CBDistillery’s CBDol Topical Salve caught our attention due to its beneficial results in dealing with the pain caused by arthritis. The only real difference between CBD creams and salves is the amount of water used in production. CBD salves are much thicker, using little to no water at all.

Colorado-based CBDistillery is one of the most popular CBD manufacturers in the market, with an extensive line of products and new ones released all the time. They even have a veteran’s discount program available for Veterans, Active Military Members, Fire Fighters, Police Officers, and EMTs.

This 1-ounce tub of topical salve may not seem like much, but there is a lot of CBD packed in that ounce with 500mg of full-spectrum CBD extracted from mature stalks and stems of the hemp plant. The process of crushing and grinding these robust herbs works to combine all the natural benefits of CBD straight to affected arthritic areas. This product is another case of a tiny bit of salve packing an extreme amount of pain relief, and consumer reviews claimed effective relief within minutes.

Highlights:
  • Contains Manuka honey, beeswax, ale, rosehip oil, witch hazel, and cucumber extract
  • Rich in nutrients
  • Available online as well as at retailers such as Ulta and Neiman Marcus
  • Great for dry and irritated skin
  • Can be used as a calming aftershave for men
Dosage: 100mg isolate oil
Size: 3.2-ounce pump

The Cannuka product line is predominately geared toward skincare rather than CBD medicinal uses, and as such, has developed a proprietary skincare formula of CBD and Manuka honey — both natural products with well-known healing and anti-inflammatory attributes.

While the potency in the CBD Harmonizing Face Cream is too low to render on our therapeutic scale, its formula is known to assist in healthier-looking skin. The combination of the CBD and Manuka Honey, together with witch hazel and cucumber extract, calms and soothes dry, sensitive skin immediately. It’s a thick cream, so just a pea-sized dollop from the pump will work to moisturize and hydrate the face and neck area.

In 2019 the company partnered with one of the most popular beauty retailers in the U.S., Ulta. It became their first-ever CBD skincare brand making it much more wildly available to consumers. Customer reviews have been delighted with the CBD Harmonizing Face Cream to work on dry or even irritated and itchy skin, noting a velvet texture and an enjoyable citrus aroma. In some cases, men have used it as a calming aftershave.

Dosage: 100mg isolate oil
Size: 4-ounce tube

While it may seem outside our potency parameters, we chose the Dixie Botanicals CBD Sunscreen as the best CBD daily cream due to its nourishing, moisturizing qualities and natural protection against the sun, which also combats against daily environmental exposure. The company was one of the first hemp-based CBD brands available on the market and is regarded as one of the most well-recognized brands in the industry. They extract their CBD from the mature stalk of the industrial hemp plant.

The 4-ounce tube contains 100mg of all-natural CBD isolate and premium CBD-infused SPF50 sunscreen, which is beneficial since it is absorbed quickly into the epidermis and interacts with the skin’s subcutaneous tissue to promote healthy skin balance.

The lightweight cream works well for daily use, and customers stated it left their skin feeling smooth, moisturized, and soft. They enjoyed the added benefit of knowing they had an extra layer of protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

Will CBD Cream Help with Pain Relief?

CBD cream may include anti-inflammatory properties to ease pain, the effects of arthritis, and muscle and joint pain and fatigue. A 2016 study using rats “indicates that topical CBD application has therapeutic potential for relief of arthritis pain-related behaviors and inflammation without evident side effects.”

The potency is the most important thing to consider when selecting a cream. CBD cream doesn’t produce effects as quickly as CBD oil, so it’s vital to look for a product containing at least 200mg of CBD. When dealing with severe pain and inflammation, you can safely consider a product with up to 1,000mg CBD per container.

How Does Topical CBD Cream Work?

The outer layer of our skin (epidermis) is pretty tough since it serves as a barrier against UV rays and harmful chemicals. CBD topical creams are formulated to absorb into the skin, and they usually contain lotions and other ingredients that moisturize and restore the skin. Topicals applied to the epidermis do not enter the bloodstream, and rarely do they interact with medications. Creams tend to be thicker than lotions — and typically include ingredients such as shea butter, aloe vera, coconut oil, and nutrients that are not only beneficial to the body but aid in carrying and applying the cannabidiol to affected areas.

How Much CBD Cream Should I Use?

A small amount used on the affected area will go a long way. Again, this is where potency and the mg of CBD used is an essential factor to consider when making a purchase. To use CBD cream, apply it with your fingers directly to the affected area, and massage into the skin. Make sure the cream absorbs before applying more. If you’re using a topical for pain, you should feel the effects reasonably quickly; depending on the additional ingredients in the cream; you may feel a cooling or warming sensation.

CBD creams are generally acknowledged as safe with very few side effects, but there are instances where they may occur. As with any topical, be sure to read the packaging and only use it externally. You may also need to consult with a doctor before use.

Does CBD Cream Work Immediately On Joint Pain?

Some of the CBD creams we’ve highlighted in this guide have had customer reviews stating they experienced relief within minutes of application, while others noticed relief some 15 to 30 minutes later. CBD creams partnered with natural analgesics like menthol or white willow bark often offer an immediate cooling or warming sensation. The potency is essential when choosing a CBD cream for pain relief, so the higher strength, the stronger and longer-lasting results will be achieved.

Does CBD Cream Help With Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain varies in seniors depending on their medical condition, location of pain, and current level of activity. Once again, potency is essential in choosing a CBD cream, so the higher the strength, the more beneficial the application will be.

What Is The Difference Between CBD Oil And Cream?

A CBD topical differs from using CBD oils orally in that you can pinpoint target areas, and it is applied to the outer layer of skin, the epidermis, which serves as a barrier against UV rays and harmful chemicals. As such, CBD topical creams affect the surface and the layers of your skin but does not enter the bloodstream. CBD oil, on the other hand, is generally taken orally and does enter the bloodstream. It can address several medical conditions from pain and inflammation to anxiety and depression, and even insomnia.

What Is CBD Cream Best Used For?

CBD cream is best used when you need to target a specific area or condition such as arthritis, general muscle, and joint pain, inflammation, and everyday aches and pain. The natural anti-inflammatory properties of CBD cream works best by applying a small amount to the affected area. CBD cream is also beneficial for skin conditions such as eczema, shingles, dry and itchy skin, and dermatitis.

Are There Any Side Effects?

CBD creams are recognized as safe and beneficial with few to zero side effects, although they do occur occasionally. Possible side effects include fatigue, changes in appetite, changes in weight, and diarrhea. As CBD cream is a topical and doesn’t typically enter the bloodstream, there is a slight possibility it may interact with some medications.

Conclusion

Studies and acceptance of CBD have been overwhelming over the last few years, and as a result, using it no longer has the stigma held over from days of old. It’s been proven that CBD creams can be very productive in dealing with arthritis, chronic pain, general aches and pains, and common muscle and joint fatigue, as well as general skincare and helping with chronic skin conditions.

Consider your pain, medical conditions, and affected areas, and talk with your doctor before using a CBD topical. Your doctor will know if there are any contraindications in regard to your condition or any medications you may be taking.

10 Best CBD Cream Brands

There are four main factors that you should consider when selecting the best CBD cream for pain. It’s about the product, yes, but it’s also about the brand. We look for the following to make sure we only recommend the best of the best.

  • Brand Reputation
In today’s market, anybody could set up a website and start selling CBD products without much effort. We look for brands that have established themselves in the CBD market and have continued to thrive over the years. • Product Variety
Some people may prefer a cooling topical CBD cream formula while others prefer a warming formula. We selected these brands because they offer a variety of different CBD products for you to choose from. We want you to have variety and be able to exercise choice, but we don’t want you to be overwhelmed with too many options.
  • Affordability
We also considered your budget when putting this list together. You’ll find there’s a variety of different price points depending on the type of product and the brand. No matter how much you intend to spend, you’ll find the best CBD cream for pain or for skin care that works for you.

What is CBD Cream?

To put it simply, CBD cream is any cream that is infused with CBD derived from the hemp plant. A CBD cream for pain is created to assist with localized pain relief, meaning you can use it on your hands if you have stiff fingers or are dealing with arthritic pain or you can rub it over large muscle areas after tough workouts when you need help with recovery.

CBD creams also help reduce dryness and can alleviate itchy skin, especially as seen with conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Each formulation is different though and not all CBD creams can be used on all parts of your body. Some creams are specifically formulated to be used on your face as part of a skincare routine while others have warming or cooling sensations and are ideal for pain relief. Make sure that when purchasing a CBD infused cream, you look at all the ingredients and ensure that you can use it on areas where you most need relief.

Some cream options are all-purpose, like body butters, and can be used all over your body. Just be sure when shopping for a cream to use on your face or other delicate areas, that they don’t have any cooling or warming Ingredients. The goal is relief when using these products, not further discomfort!

How to Use CBD Cream?

Any cream is best applied to clean, dry skin. After you take a bath or a shower, make sure you pat your skin dry before you apply the cream. For extra sore muscles, massage the cream in, especially if it has a warming ingredient. Typically, you can apply a CBD infused cream as often as needed but be sure to read the product label for the manufacturer’s instructions.

A CBD cream for pain may have a limit to the number of applications per day while other creams like body butters and face creams can be used regularly without issue. Your best bet is to read the label and abide by the instructions to ensure the best results.

How Long Does It Take CBD Cream for Pain to Work?

CBD cream for pain works rather quickly. You can expect the effects within just a few minutes after application. It’s also dependent on the potency of the product you’re using. If you’re dealing with severe chronic pain, you may require an extra strength option to deliver the relief you need. For more occasional joint pain, or minor aches and pains, you could use a lower potency option and still experience the relief that comes with CBD topicals. Overall, when you’re using the right potency for your specific needs, you’ll be experiencing the relief you’re looking for within just a couple of minutes.

What Are the Side Effects of CBD Topicals?

You likely won’t experience any side effects after using CBD cream for pain because it’s meant for targeted support as opposed to other CBD products like those you ingest. Ingestible products must travel through your body to deliver relief. CBD topicals are used only where they’re most needed. However, CBD does have a few side effects that you should be aware of, including:

  • Dry mouth
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea
  • Changes in appetite

If you have any allergies, check the product’s full ingredient list to ensure it’s safe to use on your skin.

Who Should Use CBD Creams?

Topical CBD products are ideal for anyone but especially for people who deal with chronic pain issues, who are constantly dealing with sore muscles, stiff joints, and other uncomfortable pain conditions. However, CBD has health benefits for anyone who uses it. If you have skin conditions like eczema, you may need extra support to relieve the dryness and the itchiness associated with those symptoms. CBD works as an anti-inflammatory on your skin and can help to restore your soft, supple skin texture.

There is a CBD topical for virtually any person who is interested in trying CBD products. You’ll find anything from age-defying skincare sets to rapid relief cooling sports creams. A CBD topical isn’t limited to CBD cream. You can also use body oils, lip balms, relief sticks, and salves, all depending on your preferences. If you just want to have a good face cream on hand, you can purchase a full-spectrum CBD face cream that revitalizes your delicate face skin while sleeping. A CBD topical like a face cream can also alleviate chronic pain associated with stiffening around the jaw or neurological conditions. Wherever you have pain or discomfort, CBD can get to work to offer localized relief.

Does Full-Spectrum CBD Produce a High?

No, although full-spectrum CBD does contain small trace amounts of THC, the psychoactive component of the cannabis plant, a product that uses full-spectrum hemp extract will not produce a high, especially not a topical product. The reason full-spectrum is used in topical products is to create what’s called the “entourage effect”, which makes the benefits of CBD a lot more potent. Full-spectrum refers to the use of additional cannabinoids, all of which work together to bolster their effects. This is why many people prefer full-spectrum products over CBD isolate or broad-spectrum options; however, it’s ultimately a matter of preference. Once you find what works for you, you won’t look back.

Conclusion

There you have it! Now you’re privy to the available products and can select the best CBD cream to meet your needs. You may even be tempted to purchase several different products—one to stash in your gym bag, one to replace your current face cream, and another, like body butter, to use all over. If you decide to splurge, we don’t blame you. All the products identified in this list are spilling over with positive reviews from customers who are thrilled about finding CBD topicals that make their lives a whole lot better.

Medical Cannabis: John Hopkins Study Shows That Medical Cannabis Can Help With Insomnia, Pain and Stress

Medical Cannabis : A new study involving nearly 1,300 individuals by John Hopkins University School of Medicine has shown that medical cannabis can help individuals having issues with insomnia, pain and stress.

The study lead by Dr Ryan Vandrey, an Associate Professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore is published in the journal: Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research.
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/342043973_A_cross-sectional_and_prospective_comparison_of_medicinal_cannabis_users_and_controls_on_self-reported_health

A research involving nearly 1,300 people with chronic health conditions, found that those using “medicinal cannabis” reported less pain, better sleep and reduced anxiety.

These users also tended to use fewer prescription medications and were less likely to have been to the hospital recently.

Numerous states in America have made marijuana legal for medical or recreational use, and studies have looked at whether those laws are linked to increased marijuana use, car accidents or emergency room visits.

However there is little research that has examined the impact of legalization on the individuals who use medicinal cannabis.

The research findings that cannabis users felt better than nonusers is not necessarily surprising, according to Dr Vandrey. But it’s important to demonstrate it in a study, he stressed.

The study results do not prove, however, that medicinal cannabis is effective. It’s also unclear whether certain products were linked to particular benefits.

Medicinal cannabis included not only formulations of THC: the chemical behind marijuana’s “high” but also cannabidiol, or CBD, which does not create a high. Fifty-eight percent of users were taking “CBD-dominant” oils, tinctures and other products.

Cannabidiol has exploded in popularity across the United States in recent years, and is marketed in everything from oils and capsules to cookies and coffee. The purported benefits are also wide-ranging, and include relief from chronic pain, anxiety and insomnia.

However nearly all of those claims are untested, said Dr Richard Miller, a professor of pharmacology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.

Cannabidiol or CBD has been shown to improve certain rare seizure disorders, he noted. In 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Epidiolex, a purified, pharmaceutical-grade CBD for those conditions.

Dr Miller added, “But all of the other 10,000 things CBD is supposed to do? We have no idea. I think the vast majority of it is fake.”

However cannabis clearly does have some medicinal use, according to Miller.

He added, “With respect to humanity’s experience with cannabis, people have taken it medicinally for thousands of ye ars. It was only in the last century that marijuana prohibition took hold making those years the anomaly.”

The research findings are based on responses from 808 cannabis users and 468 “controls.” All had chronic health conditions most often neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis or epilepsy; chronic pain; or psychiatric conditions such as depression or anxiety.

Also all were seeking information from a nonprofit on medical marijuana use; people in the control group were not using cannabis but were considering it.

Overall, the study found, cannabis users scored a little lower on standard scales rating pain severity and anxiety and depression. They also reported better sleep quality.

Significantly, Dr Vandrey said, was the fact that cannabis users needed less health care: They were 46% less likely to have been hospitalized in the prior month, and 39% less likely to have visited an ER. And in their day-to-day lives, they tended to use fewer prescription medications, an average of 14% fewer.

Messrs Jane Allen, an analyst with the research institute RTI International in North Carolina, called the study’s recruitment strategy a limitation. Since participants consulted the nonprofit, they likely had “positive perceptions” about cannabis from the start”.

She said, “The study would be stronger and less susceptible to bias if recruitment had been through a cannabis-neutral channel.”

However to Dr Vandrey, the findings highlight the need for researchers to dig deeper into medicinal cannabis. Studies need to look, for example, at individual health conditions and the effects of a given CBD or THC product.

Dr Vandrey added, “If we’re going to legalize cannabis to be used as medicine, then we need to better understand how to use it as medicine.”

Dr Miller agreed. He said the new findings “add to the flow of data” that medicinal cannabis has benefits but the specifics remain unclear.

The research also found that only 27% of cannabis users said they were doing so under a doctor’s recommendation.

Dr Vandrey warned, “That’s concerning. So who is recommending it to them? And are their doctors aware they’re using it?”

He warned, there’s increasing evidence that cannabinoids can interact with certain medications.

Dr Vandrey suggested that if individuals are interested in using cannabis for medical reasons, they should consult their physicians. And do the research: “See if there’s evidence of safety and efficacy for your health condition,” he stressed.

7 Surprising Ways People Are Using CBD Oil—and What Doctors Really Think About It

This compound derived from marijuana won’t get you high, and it may have real health benefits, too.

Everywhere you click these days, it seems like someone on the internet is talking about cannabidiol—also known as CBD, a chemical compound derived from the cannabis plant. Online retailers market the extract (also known as hemp oil) as a remedy for a variety of ailments, celebrities swear by its healing powers, and the ingredient is popping up in nutritional supplements and beauty products, as well. There’s even a new FDA-approved drug derived from CBD.

Although cannabis can be used to make marijuana, CBD itself is non-psychoactive—meaning that it doesn’t get you high the way smoking or eating cannabis-related products containing THC (the plant’s psychoactive compound) can. Still, there’s a lot doctors don’t know about CBD and its effects on the body, and a lot consumers should understand before trying it.

To get a better idea, Health looked at the latest science and ran some of the most common CBD-related health and wellness claims by experts in the field. Here’s what researchers think about the way these products are being marketed, and what potential users should keep in mind.

To quit smoking

There’s been some buzz about CBD oil being helpful to people trying to quit cigarettes, and one small, short-term study published in 2013 in the journal Addictive Behaviors supports this idea.

A group of 24 smokers received inhalers with either CBD or a placebo substance and were encouraged to use those inhalers for a week whenever they felt the urge to smoke. Those with the placebo inhaler did not reduce their cigarette consumption at all during that week, but those with the CBD inhaler reduced theirs by about 40%.

The results “suggest CBD to be a potential treatment for nicotine addiction,” the study authors wrote—but they also admit that their findings are preliminary. Ryan Vandrey, PhD, a cannabis researcher and associate professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University (who was not involved in the 2013 study), agrees that larger, longer-term studies are needed to know if CBD might be helpful for smokers looking to kick the habit.

For pain relief

Daniel Clauw, MD, professor of anesthesiology at the University of Michigan, believes that CBD may have real benefits for people living with chronic pain. He cites a recent clinical trial from pharmaceutical company Zynerba (for which Dr. Clauw has consulted) that found that a CBD-derived topical drug provided pain relief to patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis.

Zynerba is no longer pursuing a version of that drug for osteoarthritis, says Dr. Clauw, and there are currently no standard recommendations for what dosage or formulation of CBD (in either oral or topical form) might work best for pain relief. But he does want pain patients to know that CBD products may be worth a try—and that they may provide relief, even without the high that products with THC produce.

“I don’t think we have that many good drugs for pain, and we know that CBD has fewer side effects than opioids or even nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which can cause bleeding and cardiovascular problems,” he says. “If I have an elderly patient with arthritis and a little bit of CBD can make their knees feel better, I’d prefer they take that than some other drugs.”

In skincare products

CBD appears to have anti-inflammatory properties, says Dr. Clauw, which is one reason the beauty industry has championed it as a new anti-aging ingredient in many skincare products and spa treatments.

Francesca Fusco, MD, a dermatologist based in New York City, recently told Health that CBD oil is a rich source of fatty acids and other skin-healthy nutrients, and that it may improve hydration and minimize moisture loss. A few studies have also suggested that CBD oil may inhibit the growth of acne, although this hypothesis has only been tested in laboratory cell cultures—not in actual humans.

As a treatment for autism

Parents of autistic children may look to CBD as a potential treatment, but they should know that research in this area is really just beginning, says Vandrey.

CBD has been shown to interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, a network in the brain that seems to play a role in social behavior, circadian rhythm, and reward processing—all of which can be atypical in people with autism. For that reason, researchers are excited about a study that’s currently underway at the University of California San Diego about CBD’s potential as an autism therapy.

But besides the fact that no human trials have been conducted on CBD for autism, there’s another reason for potential patients (and parents) to weigh their options carefully. The industry is still unregulated—meaning that, in many states, there are no laws or inspections to ensure that a product’s ingredients match what’s listed on the label.

Research conducted by Vandrey and his colleagues has even shown that some CBD products contain significant levels of THC—which could get a child high and cause other unpleasant side effects. “This is an area that exists in a grey area of legality,” Vandrey says. “And because of that, anyone thinking about using cannabidiol, of any type, should proceed with caution.”

To treat seizure disorders

“In terms of solid evidence, the one thing we really know about CBD is that it can be helpful for rare childhood seizure disorders,” says Vandrey. (Beyond that, he adds, “there’s not yet sufficient evidence to support its use for any other reason.”)

Clinical trials have shown that the drug Epidiolex—a derivative of CBD—can help reduce seizures in children with two rare forms of epilepsy: Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. In June, the FDA approved Epidiolex as the first prescription drug made from marijuana, for the treatment of these two conditions.

To fight cancer

When Olivia Newton-John was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2017, the actress’s daughter Chloe Rose Lattanzi posted on Instagram that her mother was using CBD oil as a treatment. Lattanzi also wrote online that cannabis “has scientifically proven properties to inhibit cancer cell growth.”

Lattanzi may be referring to studies that have been done in animals and in laboratory cell cultures, which have shown that cannabis may have anti-cancer effects. But there haven’t yet been any studies in humans that back this up, says Vandrey.

“I would argue that those types of effects have not always been very well translated and validated in human clinical trials,” says Vandrey. “The jump from one species to another can often be misleading, especially when we’re talking about a potential treatment for something as serious as cancer.”

In other words, the mainstream medical community doesn’t recommend marijuana or CBD products as a remedy for cancer. While these substances may relieve some side effects of cancer or of chemotherapy (like pain, nausea, and vomiting), they should not be used as a replacement for conventional, research-proven treatments.

As a stress and anxiety buster

Actress Busy Philipps recently told Health that she’s a “strong proponent” of CBD and THC gummies, which she takes to help fight anxiety and panic attacks. Today’s consumers can also buy “calming” foods and beverages like hemp-oil tea and CBD-infused almonds; there’s even a brand of CBD biscuits for nervous dogs.

Informally, people have been using cannabis to relieve anxiety for years, says Dr. Clauw, although it was generally assumed that it was the THC—and the “high” that it produces—that was responsible for its stress-relieving effects. Recent research, however, suggests that CBD alone may have some anxiety-fighting power.

“It seems to have sort of a calming effect on the brain, although the precise mechanism by which it exerts these effects is not really well understood,” says Dr. Clauw. “I do recommend that patients try CBD first without THC, because you may be able to get the benefit without the side effects.”

What is CBD and what are its health benefits?

Far-reaching but mostly unsubstantiated claims about cannabidiol have made it a popular therapy for a variety of ailments. Hopkins expert Ryan Vandrey discusses the ‘cure-all’ myths associated with the drug and recent study findings.

By Marc Shapiro

/ Published Jan 3, 2020

Increasingly, products containing cannabidiol, or CBD, a chemical component of cannabis, are popping up at grocery stores, gas stations, drugstores, and internet marketplaces. Celebrated for its purported therapeutic effects and legal when derived from hemp—a form of the cannabis plant—CBD can be found in shampoos, hand lotions, skin creams, and even dog treats. Far-reaching medical claims tout its success at treating various conditions such as anxiety, acne, insomnia, addiction, inflammation, and Parkinson’s disease.

But such assertions often go far beyond what science has shown, according to cannabis researcher Ryan Vandrey, an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He and other researchers are working to understand the effects of the compound and what conditions it might actually help. He recently spoke with Dome about his research and his concerns about the growing CBD market.

Does CBD get you high? What does the research say?

THC, another chemical component of cannabis, drives most of the effects we typically associate with the drug, such as the subjective “high.” There’s this perception that CBD is not psychoactive, but I think that’s inaccurate. Research from our lab and others shows that CBD can produce subjective drug effects. CBD drug effects are different from THC and do not seem to produce intoxicating effects where performance or cognition is impaired. While that’s not a bad thing, impacting mood and behavior is a psychoactive drug effect. For example, caffeine is a psychoactive drug because it affects brain function and mood.

Are products that contain CBD safe?

There’s an inadequate regulatory framework to ensure that these products are tested, appropriately labeled, and free of contamination. There’s no way to tell how much a person should take or how to determine if it’s even helping their condition, and we still don’t know what kinds of patients are going to best benefit from CBD versus another medical intervention. Researchers are most commonly studying CBD’s application in anxiety, insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder, pain and inflammation, and autism.

A sea change in CBD drug policy?

Hopkins experts discuss the DEA’s recent decision to schedule a marijuana-derived epilepsy medication as a Schedule V drug, making it the first federally sanctioned compound derived from the cannabis plant

Some people are taking CBD for general wellness, and we have no evidence that’s a good idea. Anytime you take a medication chronically, it’s going to impact your physiology. It could be harmful. It could interact with other medications in a substantial way.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration was recently given regulatory power over hemp, and has since enacted certain restrictions on CBD. It is now illegal to market CBD by adding it to food or labeling it as a dietary supplement.

A JAMA study in which you participated shows that nearly a quarter of the CBD/hemp products sold on the internet contain THC even though THC wasn’t listed on the labels. What does that mean for the public?

Most people who use CBD are completely unaware of the possibility of THC exposure. With the legalization of hemp—which is simply cannabis with less than 0.3% THC—and hemp-derived products containing CBD, there’s potential for those products to have a significant impact on drug testing programs. My lab just completed our first CBD study, which showed that a single instance of vaping cannabis that has 0.39% THC in it (similar to the legal allowance in hemp of 0.3%) can result in a positive drug test for THC. We’re interested in determining whether using CBD may affect the outcomes of workplace drug tests and roadside tests for driving while intoxicated or under the influence.

“All told, I think there is a real therapeutic potential for cannabinoids, but we cannot abandon the methods used to bring all other medications to market.”

Also, depending on the amount used and route of administration, these products have the potential to produce impairing drug effects. So we need to ensure there are evaluation mechanisms that can differentiate between someone who is using a legal drug versus an illegal drug. Similarly, we need to be able to recognize the difference between a drug that can impair your ability to operate a vehicle versus one that does not.

What CBD studies is your team working on?

We’re characterizing the drug’s effects in healthy adults who are given a dose of CBD and looking to see whether there’s a difference if the drug is inhaled or swallowed. We’re also conducting long-term observational research on people who are using cannabis, hemp, and CBD products for medicinal purposes. We want to know why people are using it and look at their health outcomes.

We’re also looking at whether CBD’s effect changes when used in conjunction with THC.

Can you tell us a little about the initial findings from the long-term observational study?

We found that, among individuals with a variety of health problems such as epilepsy, chronic pain, autism, anxiety, and other serious health conditions, those who were using a cannabis product—people predominantly used CBD products—reported a better quality of life and satisfaction with health, pain, sleep, and mood compared with those who were not using cannabis products. When those who were not using cannabis at the time of our first survey later started using cannabis, they showed improvements in those same health measures that mirrored the differences between the cannabis users and nonusers in the beginning.

Though we can’t say definitively that CBD is effective for any of these health problems, the outcomes of this study highlight the need for additional research on hemp/CBD products in controlled clinical trials, especially for autism, anxiety, depression, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, and epilepsy conditions other than Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

What’s your advice for someone who wants to try CBD?

My advice always is, first and foremost, to talk to your physician before you try any new drug, including CBD. Just because you can buy it at CVS and Walgreens, and because there’s generally no impairment and potential for abuse, doesn’t mean that it’s without risk and an appropriate treatment for you. That discussion should focus on what treatment options are available and what the relative potential for risk and benefit would be for each option.

I have the same recommendation about CBD products for pets. We have even less research to back up CBD as a treatment for them.

All told, I think there is a real therapeutic potential for cannabinoids, but we cannot abandon the methods used to bring all other medications to market. Data that can be used to determine efficacy, safety, dosing, and formulation is needed for each therapeutic area in which CBD is believed to be beneficial. We also must be mindful of gimmick products for which there is no reason to believe CBD is a meaningful addition.

What is CBD oil?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of at least 113 active cannabinoids identified in cannabis. It accounts for 40% of the plant’s extract and is widely touted as a cure-all that can help with everything from anxiety to cancer.

According to some experts who have researched the science behind CBD oil, it has anti-inflammatory properties that can fight tumors, reduce anxiety and nausea, and relieve muscle spasms.

Is CBD oil and Hemp oil the same?

No. Hemp oil is made from hemp seeds and does not contain high levels of cannabinoids. It is used in healthy cooking and beauty products, but not for medicinal purposes. CBD oil is made from the flowers, leaves, and stalks of hemp or cannabis plants. It is rich in cannabidiol and often used for medicinal purposes.

What are the signs that my cat has cancer?

The symptoms of cancer in cats can vary depending on the type and location of the cancer. If your cat has a tumor, it may display any or all of the following symptoms:

The vet might also find lumps during an examination if she’s familiar with what to look for. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on your cat’s weight, as cats with cancer often lose weight even when they’re eating normally.

In addition, CBD oil has been known to help with joint pain, anxiety, nausea, and seizures that are associated with cancer in cats. CBD oil appears to help some, but not all, cats with cancer. The only way to know for sure whether CBD oil can help your cat is by giving it a try.

Are there any side effects to using CBD oil on my cat?

CBD oil seems to be well tolerated by most cats. There are only a few common side effects that have been reported, including lethargy, drowsiness, digestive issues, and loss of appetite. Less common side effects include vomiting and diarrhea.

There is no known toxic dosage for CBD oil in cats. If your cat has cancer or another serious illness then you should talk to your veterinarian before giving your cat CBD oil.

How do I give my cat CBD oil?

It’s best to give CBD oil orally or mix it into your cat’s food. Some pet owners find that CBD oil works better for their cats if it’s given as a treat. Many people use capsules and simply push the powder out of the capsule and mix it with food, while others will brew the oil into tea and syringe it into their cat’s mouth.

Depending on your preferences, you can use a dropper or get creative to figure out the most effective and simplest way to get CBD oil into your cat’s system.

Does CBD oil make cats high?

No, CBD oil does not contain THC, the psychoactive compound that makes people feel “high.” CBD oil actually has a calming effect on your cat. However, if you are giving your cat cannabis products for the first time then it’s best to monitor him or her closely for signs of lethargy or discomfort.

How much CBD oil should I give my cat with cancer?

If your cat has been diagnosed with cancer, then it’s best to consult your veterinarian before giving your cat CBD oil. Your vet will be able to recommend the right dosage for your pet.

In most cases, it’s recommended that you start by giving your cat a low dose of CBD and slowly work up to the recommended dosage over a period of several weeks. For example, you might start with ½-1 milligram per day, and slowly increase the dose.

How often should I give my cat CBD oil?

For most cats, it’s recommended to give CBD on a daily basis. However, you’ll want to consider your cat’s weight and the severity of their illness before determining an optimal dosage.

Some pet owners will give CBD oil for a week or two and then lower the dose after they see how it affects their cat. For animals with severe illnesses like cancer, some experts recommend giving CBD oil on an ongoing basis.

You can continue to give your cat CBD oil as long as you notice a positive effect. If you don’t see any noticeable changes in behavior or health, then it’s probably time to stop giving your cat CBD oil and try a different product.

How to Choose the Best CBD Oil for Cats with Cancer

Below we’ll walk you through the various steps in determining which CBD oils for cats with cancer will work best for you and your feline friend.

Quality of CBD Oil

As with any product you purchase for your cat, choosing the best CBD oil is essential to getting results. Look for an organic, third-party tested CBD oil that has been extracted using CO2 rather than chemical solvents.

The ingredients should include only 100% pure, unrefined coconut oil or hemp seed oil, and organic peppermint extract for flavoring.

Flavor Options

CBD oils come in different flavors, which can make them easier to ingest. Your cat may not like the taste of CBD oil on its own, so flavored CBD oils are a great option. Flavors vary widely based on the company and their manufacturing process, but common flavors include peppermint, vanilla, and grape.

Size of Dose

Standard CBD oil dosages for cats range from 1-4.5 mg per pound (2.2 mg/kg). Some companies offer much higher dosage options as well as smaller dosage options for cats that need a lighter dose.

Method of Consumption

There are many ways to give CBD oil to cats. Topical CBD oils (oils that are administered by rubbing them on the skin) tend to be favored for their ease of use, discretion, and quick absorption into the muscles and joints where they’re needed.

CBD oil can also be given orally through drops or chews. CBD oil drops are quick and easy to use, but cats can be inconsistent with their doses when using this method.

How much does CBD oil cost?

Most pet owners find that CBD oil is very affordable when they buy it in bulk. However, the cost of CBD oil may increase if you need to cover a large area when applied topically or purchase an organic product.

If your cat needs to take 5 mg of CBD oil every day, then it’s best to give him or her daily doses of a product that contains at least 50mg in each serving.

In this case, the price of CBD oil per day would be less than a dollar. However, you may also want to consider buying a larger container of CBD oil so that you have a steady supply on hand for your cat.

Does CBD oil shrink tumors in cats?

There is a growing body of research that shows how CBD oil can fortify and enhance the effects of traditional cancer treatments. Because CBD oil doesn’t contain any psychoactive compounds, pet owners can safely give it to their cats even during chemotherapy.

Do I need a medical marijuana card to buy CBD oil for my cat?

10 Best CBD Oil Alternatives for Cats with Cancer in 2022 – Reviews & Top Picks

If you’ve landed on this page because your beloved animal is suffering from cancer and you want to bring them some pain
relief, our hearts are with you. While CBD oil has become somewhat of a breakout solution for pain in humans and even in animals, it isn’t consistently regulated by the FDA, and the lack of regulations can be a safety concern for cat owners interested in using natural products like this.

Fortunately, there are several alternatives to CBD oils. Hemp oil, or hemp seed oil, is the most common one. Both CBD oil and hemp oil come from the cannabis plant, but they’re different products.

Hemp oil is mostly an extraction from hemp seeds and contains little to no cannabidiol (CBD). Meanwhile, CBD oil is an extraction from the leaves, flowers, and stalks of the cannabis plant.

If you have a cat already experiencing the effects of cancer, the last thing you want to do is introduce something that can produce more adverse side effects. Therefore, it can be safer to try other natural products that have more regulations on them.

We have reviews of some of the best hemp oil for cats and other CBD oil alternatives. Make sure to read through each one to find one that can help manage your cat’s symptoms.

These supplements can barely last a year, but Hemp Well’s supplement is effective for up to two years. It also doesn’t contain any strong smells, so your kitten will barely notice it.

9. All Natural Paws Pet Hemp Seed Oil

Volume: 2 fluid ounces
Active Ingredients: Organic hemp oil, cod liver oil

All Natural Paws Pet Hemp Seed Oil also has cod liver oil and omega-3 fatty acids infused in it. This combination provides relief for inflammation and also helps alleviate stress and agitation.

We also love how you can administer this formula in several ways so that you don’t have to just rely on having your cat eat it with meals. Along with sprinkling it on food and treats, you can just administer it orally or topically.

This formula is also safe for cats of all ages, so kittens and older cats can use it. It mainly targets inflammation and anxiety and distress. Therefore, if your cat has other symptoms, such as nausea, this product may not be the best option for them.

The formula is also very strong, so it’s important to give the correct dosage to your cat. Unfortunately, the label has very small print, so if you want a clear reading of the instructions, you have to read the online copy.

It also only contains hemp oil. Other competitive hemp oil supplements infuse nutritious oils, such as cod liver oil or salmon oil, to provide additional nutrients.

Buyer’s Guide: Selecting The Best CBD Oil Alternative for Cats with Cancer

When you’re shopping for natural pain supplements for your cat, it’s important to find the right blend or formula because some ingredients can interfere with any ongoing cancer treatments. Cats with cancer may also have sensitive stomachs and weak immune systems, so they need supplements that won’t further irritate them or make them feel sick.

Here are some things to consider while shopping for CBD oil alternatives for cats.

Active Ingredients

Pain supplements usually contain several active ingredients. These ingredients can help alleviate pain, boost the immune system or soothe upset stomachs. Common active ingredients include the following:

Some of these ingredients can help with pain management by alleviating stress and producing a calming effect. Others have anti-inflammatory properties to reduce pain and irritation. Most cats don’t have allergies to these ingredients.

However, if you have a cat with cancer, it’s always best to consult with your veterinarian to make sure that they’re safe for them to use. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

High-Quality Ingredients

Cats with cancer can have weakened immune systems and sensitive digestive tracts, so it’s important to use high-quality ingredients. Try to look for formulas that contain organic and non-GMO ingredients. Avoid artificial flavoring and preservatives because these can further irritate your cat. When applicable, try to verify if a supplement uses human-grade food.

If you’re interested in using hemp oil, try to look for food-grade hemp oil to ensure that it’s safe for consumption and not just topical treatment.

Simple Blend

Some ingredients can interfere with the efficacy of certain medications. Therefore, it’s important to have good communication with your vet when you want to introduce a new supplement to your cat’s existing regimen.

As a general rule of thumb, the simpler the supplement, the better. Therefore, before you buy a supplement, try to identify the exact issue your cat experiences. For example, if your cat has an upset stomach, find a supplement that specifically treats that symptom. The last thing you want to do is overmedicate or complicate your cat’s medication and treatments.

A simple blend without any fluff will also help you identify culprits quickly if your cat starts to exhibit new symptoms. Therefore, when it comes to cats with cancer, oils, and liquid supplements will be a safer choice. Chews usually contain fillers and binders to keep each piece intact. Some of these binders, such as sugars and potato starch, can cause an upset stomach for sensitive cats.

Out of all our reviews, Naturvet Hemp Liquid Supplement is our favorite choice. It combines nutritious active ingredients with hemp oil to provide both comfort and nourishment for cats. Pet Wellbeing Comfort GOLD Natural Herbal Supplement for Pain is our favorite runner-up because it uses all-natural ingredients that also don’t irritate the stomach.

Overall, natural supplements can help alleviate pain for cats with cancer. Make sure to work with your veterinarian to find a blend that addresses their pain without interfering with other treatments.

    What Causes Shingles?

As children, many of us experience chickenpox, an itchy rash caused by a virus that that lasts a couple of weeks from exposure to completion. Chickenpox is caused by the highly contagious varicella-zoster virus and spreads easily, especially among those who haven’t previously been infected by the virus or been vaccinated against it. Once you have had chickenpox, your body creates an immunity to the virus, preventing you from getting chickenpox again.

However, once you are exposed to the varicella-zoster virus, it remains in your system, essentially hiding inactivated in nerve cells. This virus can later become activated and cause you to develop the condition called shingles.

    Understanding Shingles

Shingles affects about 1 million adults in the United States each year. Currently, we do not have very effective treatments for this painful condition or some of its possible complications, such as post-herpetic neuralgia. As such, people are reaching out for natural ways to treat shingles in an attempt to find some pain relief. Some are using CBD oil for their shingles symptoms.

Using CBD Oil for Shingles: Just the Facts

Shingles is a painful red rash caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus. This reactivation is also called herpes zoster (not to be confused with other herpes viruses). Research shows that CBD is effective in treating various types of nerve pain, due to its effect on the endocannabinoid system. Although there are not any studies on the use of CBD oil for shingles directly, it is well within reason that it could help manage shingles pain.

    Experiencing Shingles

The shingles rash typically affects one area of the body. Because the virus hides in nerve cells, the rash forms along the area of the body that those nerves control. This is known as a dermatome.

    Common Symptoms of Shingles

The most common symptom of shingles is severe pain. Burning pain in one area of the body is usually the first symptom people notice. In some cases, people confuse the pain for other conditions, like a kidney infection or lung issue, depending on what area of the body the shingles affects. The tingling, burning pain generally lasts for a few days.

Next, a red rash develops. After a couple days, the rash forms small clusters of fluid-filled blisters that are terribly painful and itchy. Some people also experience:

    • Headaches
    • Fever
    • Abdominal pain
    • Sensitivity to light
    • Fatigue

In most cases, the blisters scab over after 10 days or so, and after 3 to 5 weeks the rash clears.

    Risk Factors for Shingles

Not every person who has had chickenpox develops shingles. Approximately 1 in 3 adults will develop shingles at some point in their lives. Although we do not know all the reasons why some people develop shingles and others do not, there are some common risk factors. These include:

    • Being an older adult (over 50)
    • Lowered immune system
    • High amounts of stress
    • Medications such as steroids

    Is Shingles Contagious?

You cannot catch shingles from someone else; however, the varicella-zoster virus is highly contagious. This means people who are exposed to people with shingles cannot catch shingles, but they can catch chickenpox.

    Complications of Shingles

Although most cases of shingles run their course within about five weeks, there are instances where this is not the case. In people with lowered immunity, the episode may last longer than five weeks. This warrants medical attention from your doctor. Furthermore, shingles can produce other complications. These complications include:

    Post-herpetic Neuralgia

Post-herpetic neuralgia is when pain continues in the area of the shingles rash, even after the rash has cleared. This is due to damage having been done to the nerves. People who experience post-herpetic neuralgia may also become depressed or have issues sleeping due to their chronic pain.

    Eye Conditions

If shingles develops around the eye, it can result in eye infections that could lead to blindness.

    Skin Infections

Skin infections are also possible with shingles. If the rash is scratched and the blisters are broken open, bacteria can enter the open skin and create an infection.

    Conventional Treatment

Currently, there is no cure for shingles. The typical course of treatment includes anti-viral medications, including acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir. These medications can help shorten the duration of the outbreak, however, they do not provide pain relief.

The conventional treatment for shingles pain is prescription medications like opiate painkillers, lidocaine numbing cream, or capsaicin topical patches. In addition, on some occasions, medications like gabapentin or anti-depressant drugs are recommended.

    Post-herpetic Neuralgia Treatment

Post-herpetic neuralgia is difficult to treat. The most common treatments for post-herpetic neuralgia pain are steroids, traditional painkillers, and anti-depressants. These drugs are not particularly effective, and they also come with a host of side effects. For example, pain killers can be addictive.

    Using CBD for Shingles

Because shingles is such a painful condition, and treatment options are limited and are only somewhat effective, people are turning to CBD products to help relieve their shingles pain.

CBD products are available as oral supplements, including gummies, pills, and oil, as well as topical salves.

The History of CBD Use for Pain

CBD is derived from the industrial hemp plant, otherwise known as cannabis sativa. There is anecdotal evidence to support cannabis’s use for pain management as far back as 2000 B.C.

There are numerous accounts of people using medical cannabis (also known as medical marijuana) for nerve pain. Medical cannabis contains the same cannabinoids as CBD oil. However, medical marijuana also contains THC, which is a psychoactive component not found in CBD products.

How CBD Can Relieve Shingles Pain

    The Endocannabinoid System

The way we perceive pain is controlled in part by our endocannabinoid system. This is a signaling system in our bodies that influences our sensitivity to pain, especially pain due to inflammation. The cannabinoids in CBD oil activates the CB1 receptors and the CB2 receptors, which suppress our perception of pain levels.

    Inflammation and Pain

The cannabinoids in CBD have potent anti-inflammatory properties. Research supports that CBD reduces the number of inflammatory chemicals in the body, including TNF. These inflammatory chemicals are part of our pain pathways, and reducing inflammatory mediators in the body can help lower pain levels.

    What the Research Says

To date, there have not been any research studies specifically regarding the use of CBD oil for shingles. However, CBD’s effects have been studied in relation to a variety of other pain conditions, including joint pain, other types of nerve pain (including chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain), and trauma-induced nerve pain.

CBD and Other Types of Nerve Pain

A review of the efficacy of CBD oil on several types of nerve pain found that CBD products are overall effective for nerve pain. Although the study did not assess CBD oil for shingles itself, it is reasonable to consider that CBD may be effective for treating shingles pain due to its effect on the endocannabinoid system.

    Chemotherapy-induced Neuropathic Pain

A recent study found that CBD products were effective at reducing the neuropathic pain, which is pain that comes from nerve damage, in people treated with chemotherapy drugs. These drugs can negatively affect nerve cells, much like a shingles outbreak can, resulting in chronic nerve pain. Given that CBD was able to reduce pain in this condition, the possibilities of using CBD oil for shingles pain are optimistic.

    Post-herpetic Neuralgia and CBD

As previously mentioned, a complication of shingles is chronic nerve pain—or post-herpetic neuralgia. Animals studies support that CBD is helpful for post-herpetic neuralgia. However, there have not been human studies to confirm this. Therefore, more research is needed.

A Summary of What the Research Says

To date, there have not been any human studies regarding the use of CBD oil for shingles. However, the use of CBD for shingles as well as post-herpetic neuralgia is promising.

Several studies on the use of CBD for other types of nerve pain show it is effective for pain management.

    Final Thoughts

A shingles outbreak is a painful medical condition and can disrupt many aspects of your life. Current treatment medications are only somewhat effective and come with numerous side effects.

CBD products are shown to be capable of reducing nerve-related pain and can also help with post-herpetic neuralgia. However, it is always recommended to consult with your physician before making any changes to your medications or trying new natural supplements.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not currently regulate CBD products. When purchasing CBD in any form, ensure you are using a product that has undergone third-party testing. This helps ensure that the product you buy meets certain quality and purity standards.
